Sailing to Willoughby Harbor Norfolk

Sunday, August 31, 2008
Willoughby Harbor Norfolk, Virginia, United States
Before departing this morning we took the dink over to Alize so that Dave could climb its mast to check out the anchor light and VHF antenna. We left Fishing Bay at 0916 hours, following out Alize and Cinderella under motor sail with main.   We passed Alize and caught Cinderella before turning deep downwind.

The day was mostly sunny, dry and breezy with winds NE 10-20 early, then decreasing, then rising again to 10-15 kts . We motor sailed with the main early until out of the river mouth, then as the pattern of the wind changed we added the jib, then furled the jib, then bore off and raised the spinnaker-our first time with full main. This proved difficult to manage. The wind slacked so we dropped the main downwind-our first time for this maneuver. We sailed under spinnaker alone until reaching the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.

The wind returned during the final portion of our journey. We snagged numerous small blues and one small Spanish Mackerel. We arrived in Willoughby Harbor with Alize soon behind and anchored off Mark and Diane D.'s home on the waterfront by 1712 hours.

We had John and Joan over for dinner on the grill, but not before Dave had gone over to Alize to climb the mast again to replace its anchor light and VHF antenna.
