Vacationing with Alize

Norfolk, Virginia, United States
Finally—back to sailing! We've spent Labor Day week out cruising with Alize. We left Norfolk September 5 sailing on pleasant, sunny N NE 10-15 kt winds to the Severn River on Mobjack Bay. This was the first upwind "test" of our new main sail and rudders. We took a long tack across the Bay then headed for Mobjack. Caught only a couple small bluefish on the clark spoon – no keepers. The next day we headed to Fishing Bay on the Piankatank River arriving just before 4PM after a pleasant sail with partly sunny skies and N NW wind 12-18 kts. We spent the following day laid up in Fishing Bay due to stong NE winds and rain. Dave cleaned the props and barnacles off the hulls. We started the watermaker for the first time since it was “pickled” years ago by the prior owner. The quality of the water seemed good but we were experiencing a very low flow rate, well below the manufacturer’s rated flow so this was something we would have to investigate further before considering the re-start a success. On September 9 we headed southbound to the East River on Mobjack Bay on north winds blowing 15 kts. The weather was not proving to be very nice this week so we spent another day laid up in the East River. It was rainy and miserable. Dave and John (out of boredom) visited a nearby marina and toured a custom boat named Chanty. A gorgeous piece of work. On September 11 we motored to the North River on Mobjack for a change of scenery, admiring the homes on the river bank including that of Chanty’s owner. The following day we returned to Willoughby Harbor Marina in light NW wind and flew our new secondary spinnaker. The color combination is quite wild but the sail flies well!
