Juneau, You Know?

Juneau, Alaska, United States
Juneau is Alaska’s capital city and is small in stature
compared to the vast state it leads . One supposes that is just how Alaskans
like it. There are forty-one excursion choices. There is everything from a
walking tour of Juneau to dog sledding to rainforest hiking to helicopter treks
to high-speed catamaran sailings to sport fishing charters to whale watching
boats of many kinds. I opt for the Photo Safari by Land and Sea. We are
promised photographs of glaciers and whales and more. We ride in a small safari
boat with very large swing-up windows and an ample bow area. It is perfect for
photography. We find lots of whales, bald eagles, sea lions and get up close
and personal with the Mendenhall Glacier. Our guide is a wonderful hearing
impaired young man named Hugh who teaches me a few things about my Nikon that I
did not know. The light is flat due to the overcast skies and the air is
chilly—in the mid-fifties—and the day is very fine. My photos won’t win any
prizes but there are some keepers to be sure.
Back on board we have plenty of time to relax as we don’t
sail until 9:00pm . I head for the fitness center and get five miles in on the
treadmill. By the way, Sprint comes through for me in Juneau giving me a strong
signal. I text Cianan in Bangkok and talk with Megan back home in Kansas City.
Our next stop is Skagway. We are scheduled to be there at 7:00am.
