Tallinn, Estonia
If ever there was a beauty pageant for small medieval towns in the Baltic, Tallinn could easily take the crown, not only for its obvious good looks, but for its talent of aging ever so gracefully. Tallinn's Old Town with its Gothic spires, ancient bell towers, and winding streets, is perhaps the best preserved of its kind in all of Europe.
Back in the Middle Ages, Tallinn was divided into two parts: the Toompea with its hill top castle fortress run by the Teutonic Knights; and the Lower Town inhabited by Hansa merchants. The whole historic district has managed to retain its charm through Swedish and Soviet rule, and even today, coexists in perfect harmony with a thoroughly modern Tallinn. Estonia’s fascinating capital has a myriad of parks, cafes, sporting activities, and shops.

The Tallinnites are quite proud of their Song Festival.
