Lima, Peru
With a wealth of history, art and architecture, Peru's capital city (Lima) never ceases to leave visitors with fond memories and a desire to return. This city dates way back to 1535, when Lima was first established by the Spanish as a means to set down roots in Western South America and foster trade. Those products eventually worked their way over the Andes (by mule) to Callao, and were shipped to Panama, then transported to Cuba and on to Spain. After a tidal wave destroyed Callao in 1746, the Spanish began constructing a major fortress (Real Felipe) to prevent the city's ruin from human forces.

Francisco Pizarro originally dubbed Lima "La Ciudad de los Reyes" (The City f Kings) and, given the importance of the city to the Spanish Viceroyalty, Lima lived up to that moniker’s ambitions .
With Peruvian independence in 1821, Lima became the country’s capital. The city survived various wars, occupations, and natural disasters to develop into a major international destination known for its lush urban parks, multi-ethnic cuisine and a treasure trove of museums.
