Apparently the 50th day after Easter (next
Monday) is just as important as the 40th day (Last Thursday,
Asecension Day) so it’s another bank holiday and all the campsites are full.
Originally we planned to go to Hamburg after our days
activities but given the camps had already declined our entry we thought
Luneburg (a smaller town) would be best.
We arrived at 4.40pm, after a few closed road detours and
literally got the last available space, we think we’ll stay 2 nights to avoid the
most of the bank holiday busyness.
Today after our McDonalds stop (for the internet, to find
out the campsites had rejected us) and supermarket stop (to make sure we’ve got
essentials in case everything closes), we made it todays activity just in time
to have lunch in the car park.
After lunch we spent a couple of hours looking around the
Bergen-Belsen Concentration / POW camp in the museum and around the grounds. We
felt we should go to one but as you can imagine it was all very upsetting.
Final stop Luneburg, just in time for aperitifs, we’ll spend
the day investigating tomorrow (subject to the weather, very hot today but
thunder forecast for tomorrow).
Rain and more rain today, so we quickly investigated the
flea market in the field next to us and dashed into Luneburg between showers.
All of the buildings in Luneburg are beautiful, nothing was
destroyed during the war but all buildings were affected by the local salt
mining, which only ceased in 1980. The buildings look beautiful but obviously a
lot of hard work has happened to keep them standing due to the subsidence
they’ve incurred from the mining.
The local speciality aside potatoes and asparagus is Apple
cake, which is really very nice, good job we’ve only two more days in Germany.
Fancy not mentioning Asparagus before now, it’s for sale on
street stalls everywhere and most restaurants are serving Asparagus menus.
Whilst we don’t mind asparagus it really is a bit too much!!
Another thing we forgot to mention is the amount of Love
Wagons we keep passing hidden in the woods. Some have campervans and the poorer
ones have caravans, but all a step up on the ones in Spain who just have chairs
at the side of the road and Italy where they’re just standing!!
