Today we started making our way westwards around the north
of Iceland. Our first stop was Goafoss which was another waterfall but this
time on the side of the road rather than the hike we had to do for the last
ones and not as steep a drop but much wider this time so just as spectacular.
The second recommended stop for the day was Laufus Turf
Houses where there was a café. The turf houses and the church were spectacular
although we didn’t pay to go in the turf houses as we’d already done this. The
café had coffee and cake but nothing useful for lunch so yet again we couldn’t
spend our money and we lunched in the car park.
The main stop for the day was Akureyri the 2nd
largest town in Iceland. It took us about 5 mins to walk round the shopping
area, so you can imagine the size of the place. We did walk a little further to
investigate the botanical gardens which were very nice. The liquer shop was
very interesting, £42 for a 70cl bottle of Bacardi and about £13 for a bottle
of wine that would cost us £4 in the UK (€2 in Spain or Portugal), thank
goodness we brought enough with us.
Last stop and the highlight of the day for Mark was the
Christmas shop just next to the campsite. It was a lovely place but the items
to purchase weren’t out the ordinary so we escaped without a new mortgage!!
