Stykkishólmur, Iceland
The rain did stop and then the wind started, my word what a rough night. It stayed dry in the morning though so we went for a walk around the town which would have been quite unremarkable were it not for the Volcanic church and lamp post art (knitted/crocheted adornments). After leaving camp our first stop of the day was Pingeyrar Church and that was brilliant. On arrival the church was locked so we looked at the outside, peeked through the windows and then made a cup of coffee hoping for some action at 11am. A couple of cars arrived but no luck and then a minibus full came and a man with keys. We jumped out and went in with them and it turned out to be a private tour that we sat in on. The inside of the church was beautiful with an altar made in Nottingham in 1460 for the monastery. The monastery was demolished and 3 churches have since been on that site, the current church is close by, and now they are starting to excavate the site of the monastery.
The 13 Apostles in Wood (replicas, originals in the Museum in Akureyi) were amazing as were the pulpit and font, both of which were given to the church in the late 1690s.
Next stop was a few km north of Hvammstangi on route 711 around the Vatnsnes peninsula to look for seals.  After a couple of false stops we ended up 22km down a gravel road but found them. The seals were cute but mainly quite a long way out, although there were a couple in the sea playing close by. Actually the better sight here were the nesting Eider ducks, literally alongside the paths.
This detour took a long time as the roads were so poor and we still had 120 miles to go in terrible wind so we then had to get going, no more stops allowed.
We arrived in time to cook dinner and get to the meeting on time (just)
We decided to have a relaxing day today, given we had done so much over the last few days.
To start with we walked into town and actually it was very nice and whilst small kept us entertained for a good few hours. We had coffee in a café on the harbourside, then climbed the rock at the end of the pier (Sudgunsey I think) where there was a beautiful view for miles. There are 00s of small uninhabited islands just off the coast making the view spectacular. Fishing is a big industry in town and lots of small boats were coming and going all day, unloading on the docks with cranes and forklifts was continuous. The speciality was scallops but we didn’t actually see those coming in.
For lunch we went to the local bakery and that was nice, there aren’t many around in Iceland. Our afternoons entertainment was the local pool and hot tubs, all outside and looking onto the snowy mountains.
Finally we went out for dinner to try the scallops. The restaurant was very nice and we thoroughly enjoyed dinner. We are definitely way over budget today
