Before leaving Stykkish (as the locals call it) we went to
the next village to look for sacrificial ruins. Given it was cold today we were
all togged up and we believe we traipsed through private farmers fields (it
didn’t say or we wouldn’t have done it) but unfortunately didn’t find any
Viking ruins, just fallen down sheds.
We had a couple of photo stops on the way to Borgarnes and
arrived just after lunch. Our intention was to investigate the town in the
afternoon but the very inclement weather put paid to that.
Today was our big treat on the tour, a trip up the 2nd
largest glacier (Langjokull) in Iceland and then an on foot visit inside the
glacier. Oh my what a spectacle, whilst
it’s manmade it is truly real and amazing. The glacier actually moves 15 metres
downwards each year and the tunnels only last for 14 years so new tunnels have
to be dug or scraped constantly.
Fissures are constantly opening and closing and the glacier evolves. However if
global warming doesn’t stop this whole 45km wide and 700m deep glacier will not
exist in 100 years.
