Americus, Georgia, United States
Having a great time in my short stay here at Koinonia Farms. It is Christian based, non-denominational cooperative farm. It was founded in 1942 by Clarence and Florence Jordan. clarence was a farmer and Greek scholar. He wrote Cotton Patch Version" of the gospel of Matthew as if it was in rural Georgia. In the 50's and 60's they received quite a bit of persecution and were reviled for their belief in the brother/sisterhood of all people regardless of race. They experienced fire bombings and shootings and boycots of their store. Clarence planted 90 some acres of pecan trees which thepeople on the farm would ( and still do) process and sell. when the locals were boycotting, he had the idea to start a mail order business with them and the motto of the campaign was "Help us ship the nuts out of Georgia".   Millard and Linda Fuller, the founders of Habitat and Fuller Centers came to Koinonia and Clarence was their mentor. Koinonia was then, the birthplace of both organizations. The farm continues today. To learn more, go the the website www.koinoniapartners.org   That's all for now- heading down to Santa Rosa Beach in Florida tommorrow after lunch to work with the Fuller Center there.
