My second full week back working with Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders flew by. We had about forty volunteers working with us here this week from three different places around the US. One group came from Elm Grove Lutheran Church in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. Another group of high school kids from St. Joe's Prep in Philadelphia. The third group was a small, crack team of three people from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Penn Yan, New York. Last week, I told Bart and Bill (FCDR's staff Const. Director) that I would claim ownership of Malcolm Savage's project. I had the pleasure of working with the Penn Yan group of three with a coupla days supplement from the young folks from St. Joes. The group leader is Wanda Wood. She is a retired Air Force colonel with 30 years of service under her belt. She was a personnel director for the USAF with up to 6,000 people under her command. Also in the group was Mr. Milton Hanas who is 82 years old- in seemingly great health who was steady working all week- must have painted a couple of miles worth of base and trim. Third member of the group was a farmer not a framer- Dave Christiansen. another hard worker who put up with Peter changing his mind about what we would be doing and asking him to start on something else before he finished the previous task. Dave has a farm back in New York. Used to have milk cows but now raises only for beef. Hard worker and full of jokes. Mostly bad jokes. The three of them have been on other mission trips together, and I would watch for Wanda's reaction whenever Dave would tell a joke- thinking maybe she had heard it before. Anyway, we pushed the restoration of Malcolms home along this week. We installed the ceramic tile in the kitchen, re-set the beautifully restored kitchen cabinets (Malcolm and a friend had made them originally and they survived the storm.. We got our Home Depot delivery of flooring, doors, countertops, etc. to finish up the house we hope in about another week. The other groups were working on two new homes that are up on piers, one here in Port Sulphur and the other w-a-a-y down at the end of the earth in Venice. They were installing Hardi siding on the one house and the group in Venice framed the roof with trusses. The two homeowners, Malcolm and Chauvin Buras are both in FEMA trailers that are due to be pulled by April 30 and if they're not out by then they, as well as another 80 families will be facing an $800/month fine. Next week we have just over twenty volunteers coming. Phil Manoggs group has been down to work with us a bunch of times. That's all for now- Peter
