Wrapping things up in Plaquimines Parish

Buras, Louisiana, United States
We just sent off a group of 21 adults and and young adults from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, Indiana. The leaders of the group, Denise and Ted heard about our mission in Plaquimines Parish from Mike Bultmeyer, who is from Indiana also and who is a boomeranger who worked with us numerous times in Biloxi and is a good friend. The group this week also included Seumas Bates (pronounced Shaymus) a Scottish lad who is an anthropology major working on his doctorate studying the people of Plaquimines Parish, La. We also had our small paid staff as well as a few longer term volunteers coming and going this past week. My son Alex came and worked with us for two months (on summer break from school at Central Michigan Univ.) and Miss Rebecca Boon, a young lady from Singapore, but more recently studying in Texas and then Masters at State College, Pa. who was working with us for just over a month and had to go back to finish her Thesis on glaciers. Nancy McDaniels came to work with us for a week four months ago. Since she is volunteering, she asked me the other day what her title was, so she is Special Assistant. Brent is here too and Miss Kim from Ohio state. And Doug and Craig. So all together, we are getting these houses done. The home for Mr. Peter Le on fosters lane in Buras, which we did as a blitz build with the Navy personnel back in mid-April and cmpleted 90 percent is now 100 percent done. Actually closer to 110 percent because of the furniture. Normally, we jsut build the houses (homes) and leave it up to the homeowners to provide their own furnishings, however, in this case, one of our partners at CPR, Jim Woodard, made contact with the Navy base here that is remodeling a hotel on base and donated 90 rooms of sofas, bedding, dressers, pictures, lamps, etc. so that the home now is move in ready. Denise and her crew really put the beautiful final touch at Mr. Le's house. Next nearest to completion is the home of David and Julie Stouflet who are at Orangewood. exterior is complete and the interior only needs touch up paint, electrical and HVAC trim out, cofuntertop ends finsihed off and that one should be ready to go by weeks end. the last home for Mr. Buras at Jump Basin should be completed the following week by the 22nd. I'm thinking two dedications on that day but we'll let Bart and Heather handle that when they get back. Bart's in texas for a funeral and Heather and Allysa went up to Boston. This week we have tow groups arriving to help us cross the finish lines. One group from Macon, Ga, is led by Chris Fuller, who is the son of the founders of both Habitat and the Fuller Centers, Linda and Millard Fuller. The other half of the 30 people coming this week are from Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile, Al. Still not sure what's next for either FCDR or yours truly- until then, we focus with the blinders like the horses in central park, ny to finish these four and then, look up and it will be revealed, I bet. That's all for now. " And a good time was had by all." - RB
