Port Sulphur, Louisiana, United States
Well,it was a good run down here. I arrived on March 13th of this year, on an invite from Bart Tucker to work with th Fuller Center to help build four new homes for four families whose homes had been destroyed by hurricane Katrina six years ago. Since Thanksgiving of last year I had been on a self-imposed mission to visit 50 states in 50 weeks to volunteer my services to either Fuller Centers or Habitat. Bart's invitation and my acceptance thereof put the 50/50 on hold for a bit and further strengthened the truth in one of my favorite sayings- "If you want to give God a chuckle, make a plan". So, today is my last day here in Louisiana. I just came from a meeting with John the building inspector for the parrish and he just signed off on our final inspection for the last of the four new homes we built here, the home of Mr. Chauvin Buras. From March until now, we have hosted groups of volunteers, with anywhere from 15 to 53 members in the groups, that would come down to work with us for a week at a time, from all over the United States and even one young man, Seaumus, came from Scotland. Volunteering to help one of our neighbors is really one of the best kept secrets out there. Many times, those who have come to help with us here have expressed the feeling that they really have received more than they gave. This mission for me for the last five years or so has certainly been the most rewarding work that I have done thusfar in my time on this earth. I had always wanted to be a teacher when I was young, and working with Habitat and Fuller Center has been a good fit in that I am able to teach what I know (how to build and re-build homes) Another great perk is that I have gotten to meet so many great people from all around this great country of ours. If and when the 50/50 picks up again, Ive got standing invitations all around the country to come visit when I am in (fill in the blank state). So, for now, signing off in Louisiana and driving today over to start a new chapter in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to work with the Habitat affiliate which has re-started there after the tornado. Stay tuned- Peter
