Working with St. Mary's and Nike guys

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States
Just wrapping up a great week working with a group of volunteers from near Savannah, Ga. They came for the week and are all from the same church, St. Mary's Presbyterian Church. You can tell they are Presbyterians by their blue shirts (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance they say). Part of the group worked on trim, flooring and touchup painting at Teddy and Rosie's home and the rest worked with me on House #3. We finished up the installation of the metal roof. We were helped out by a local professional roofer named Mark, who helped us order the correct material and also got us a big discount on that as well. He was a great teacher for us for the three days it took us to complete the installation. Mark had an accident four years ago where he fell off a roof and broke both feet at the same time. We had to keep shooing him off the ladders and not letting him get up on the roof. He and another friend of his, Robert, have been in the roofing business for 42 years together. What a great blesing'he was to us this week. This past week also, while the volunteers were busy finihing up the ouside of the house, our subcontractors finished up the plumbing, electrical and heating rough-ins and all three passed their inspections so that at days end, we installed the insulation in the walls and we should be drywalling on Monday. We will be using Larry and Herman from Jackson, Ms. They have worked with Mark Scott and the Bay Waveland affiliate and also some for the FCDR in Port Sulphur, La. These guys are amazing. They come in at 10 in the morning, hang all the sheetrock in the house by 2 or so, then Herman and tqhe finishers come in and do their thing and the following morning at 7, after some light sanding, we are painting! Less than 24 hours, badda-bing-badda.boom-done and done.
Today (Friday) a group of four executives from the Nike Corp . in Oregon came to work with us for the day. They have a tradition of going to different cities to watch college football and came this weekend to watch the Arkansas-Alabama game, but also wanted to help out while they were here in Tuscaloosa. They worked together to install the plywood on the carport ceiling and also finished up the siding and trim around the carport. The St. Mary's group did a fine job also completing and touching up the exterior paint on the house. It really looks great.

In other great news, the office has been negotiating with the YMCA for the use of Y's Acres, a camp very close to our worksite that will make for a great volunteer camp. It had fallen into somewhat state of disrepair and what we are asking is that if we do the repairs, we could use the camp to house volunteers. Please keep this in your prayers that it works out well for all.
