Minden, Louisiana, United States
Just back from a week in Minden, La. working at the Millard Fuller 3rd annual Legacy Build. Our host for the week was Charlie Park and the local Fuller Center for Housing. They have been preparing for the event for a year and a half. The goal for the week was to build 8 new homes and refurbish 7 older homes in Minden. The eight new homes are situated in a new development on Millard Fuller Drive. Approximately 300 volunteers showed up from all over the country to participate in the build. Lots of reunions of old friends from past Habitat and Fuller Center builds. The new home that I had the privelage to lead was house number 8. It would become the home of Yvette Morris and her family and was also called the Glen Barton House in honor and memory of good friend and long time supporter of both organization who passed away earlier this year. Glen and his wife Brenda had been working to prepare for this build with Charlie. Through her struggling with the loss of her husband, Brenda soldiered on and was there all week making sure all the logistical ducks were in a row. House eight was manned and womaned with volunteers many of whom had worked with Bart Tucker and I in Biloxi, Ms. and Port Sulphur, La. Don Moore, Annie Oneil and A.M. came from Northern Virginia to help. Jim "I'm a farmer not a framer" Hansen and Mr. Bill, friend from New Zealand Sarah and Jim's wife Nancy came all the way from Washington State to help house 8. Mike and Wife Charlotte came from Massachusetts. Hanna came from California.    A great time was had by all.   We got the exterior of our home completed but hit a glitch with the interior and the timing/performance by the electrical and drywall subs so that by the end of the week, drywall was hung but not finished, so no painting, cabinets or trim were able to be done so our group went out and helped the other homes get caught up. I hung the kitchen cabinets (surprise!) in house 7 across the street. Didnt need too many screws to hold them up because the paint was still wet on the walls behind them. My friend Jeremy from South Bend Indiana whom I met in Tuscaloosa came along with for the week also and was a great help. He and Jim installed the metal roof in a timely and professional manner. Linda Fuller, co founder of both Habitwt and Fuller Center was there all week with new husband Paul Degelman. I re-extended our invitation to one of our dedications in the near future to them since Linda spent the first few years of her life in the Holt area of Tuscaloosa. Great time was had by all- back to work Monday- It was a nice vacation-  PS By the way, in the week I was gone, we welcomed our new NCCC Americorps team and were also graced with a visit by Bay/Waveland staff who rocked while I was away- Sorry I didnt have achance to meet them- Till next week- Peter PPS Got my notebook back and working and the man from the geek squad even showed me how to import pix from the camerq so I dont have to drag this notebook with me everywhere.
