Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States
Things are starting to heat up a bit. This past week we had people working at four different sites. A group from Georgia was here for the week and were mostly working on Appy Jones house. Worked on installation of the metal roof and started the cement board siding. A small group worked with me to cross off the last few items on the punchlist at Camilla's house. On Saturday, a group of students from Univ. of Central Florida arrived and helped to finish up the installation of the sod all around Camilla's also and we dragged of all the rest of the construction debris and tools such that Camilla's is D-O-N-E! Halelujia! The doves have been slain. Next week it's off to the quadraplex. Brandon worked with a large group from the local Episcopalian church, led by Kelly Hudlow, they had an extremely productive day- We rented a little mini-excavator and between Brandon, Woody and myself for a little, dug the 30 by 50 footer on Friday in preparation fo the first big workday. On Saturday, the volunteers finished up the digging with shovels, bent, cut and placed the re-bar and got the footings ready for concrete, probably on Tuesday. There's talk of us installing the cinder block foundation walls in house (as opposed to subcontracting it out to the professionals. Let's see. Maybe the next one.
This week we said farewell to our beloved and best-yet Americorp team, River 3 . Ashley Denn was their awesome team leader (Wearer of the coveted green shirt). The hard working team members were Chelsea, Brit- TAN-ny, Josh, Breanna, Glenda, Amanda, Alex, Jocko and Allyssa. Apologize for any mis-spells, you guys. I really enjoy having N-trips working with us. By the time their spike with us is up, their team has gelled (?) even more and we get to know them and really appreciate them as individuals. But also at the spike, I'm wishing they didn't have to leave, dagnabbit. Get 'em all trained and then off they go. It's not fair.
I also had the pleasure of meeting and working together with Frank and Hope Arnold, who came to work with us for the week fro Tucker, Georgia. They are in their 80's and still going strong. They've been married for 55 years and were missionaries in Brazil for 33 years. Since retiring 15 years ago they have returned to Brazil 14 times. They both speak fluent Portugese. I met with Frank and Hope Wednesday evening after service at 1st Presb. Church and asked them why they volunteered . Frank said his inspiration came from Paul's letter to the Thesalonians to "never tire of doing good". And also from the Bible, that in Moses' day, the priests would retire at 50 but then would go on to help and counsel the younger. Pastor Charlie of 1st Pres. has sponsored their work in Brazil and has been there for a visit as well. First Pres has also opened their doors here to house volunteers. The youngest of their 5 children live in Birmingham and Steve's wife was the UA mascot while she was in school there. Middle son John works for an orgamization called World Relief, that helps political refugees get settled in'the US. The Arnolds helped with the final touchup and cleanup on Camillas home and'also'had achance to meet her one afternoon. Well thats all for this week- Peter
