North and South United!

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States
We had five or six groups working with us last week. It's very interesting the way the scheduling of these groups works. It kind of feels like the hand of God is arranging things here. For example, of the six groups that were with us last week, two of them were assigned to me. Both of these groups are first time boomeranger groups with us, that is, they worked with us before last October, and came back again. One group of eight men came from Spruce Pine United Methodist Church in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. Pastor David brought some repeaters with him, but last year worked out in Holt on Camilla Coache's house. During that very same week last fall, a group from South Carolina from Grace Covenant Church also worked here and also on Camilla's home. So what are the chances that both groups would decide to come back, in the same week, and be assigned to work on the same site? Pretty good it seems! Because that's what happened. The construction leader of the South Carolinians was Roger, who owns a construction company back home. It made my week so easy with these two groups working on three of the four homes on the quadraplex. Just show them what we wanted accomplished, point them to the materials, and off they went. The Spruce Piners worked mostly on 2405 5th St. and completed the installation of the bamboo flooring and started and finished all of the tile work in the kitchen, baths and utility rooms. They also tweeked the safe room door at this home such that it would close and lock (all 3 deadbolts and the latch). When they finished that home, some of the guys, Dave and Marvin came over to 5th street and worked on Mya's front porch columns and deck and handrail. Mike was steady working all week but mostly finishing up the window trim units that were started last week. The South Carolinians finished up most of the exterior siding, trim and painting (again!- don't get me started with the battle of the paint!). We also got most of the site behind the four homes tightened up by attacking the piles of material that had been pushed around and stuff added to the top of by sorting that all out and putting together the three remaining 6 x 8 storage sheds, which are stick built to look like the house they belong to. This group also re-stained the exterior cedar shutters and assembled those for the two homes on 5th. It's nice working on more than one house in same location because you can get some production of repetitive tasks done with no extra effort. (shutters, window units, storage sheds, etc.). We also had the two 400 lb. safe room doors show up this week, after waiting a month for them. We've had some issues with these monsters. You set the welded metal frame with the framing while building the safe room and normally would set the door at the same time to make sure it closes, same margin all around, closes and locks, etc. but if the doors are back ordered, you keep going and measure and hope for the best, but on a few, after the drywall and trim has been installed, the door shows up, gets hung and then, oops!, it doesnt close or it hits the jamb or the deadbolts don't line up. Dagnabbit, I hate that! Almost as much as I hate mis-snapped lines for siding. Anyway, Roger and Norm(?) took two doors two hours and Allelujia! they both close, lock, even margins, everything! Before the drywall! Wonderful!
We got some group pictures of the two groups together at the end of the week . There were some in the group that I particularily enjoyed meeting and working with. One couple from Switzerland, Albert and Elisabeth were a joy to meet and also a transported New Yorker, Chris 2, was also great to meet.
I had a friend come thru town for one night on his way up to Buffalo, NY where he has accepted a calling for pastor at a church there. Corky joined us for dinner after a quick tour to see the homes completed and under construction. He said that once he's settled in, will bring a group down to work with us too.
Got to try out my new dental insurance (provided thru work with the medical) and a have a split molar (#15-upper left) repaired and two others while he was in there for $52 first deductible plus $0.
Ended the week with a bye bye dinner with the Spruce Piners at Carmello's- most got the shrimp and grits.   MMMM, yum!   Good food, good friends, life is good, God is Great!
