Long week!

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States
I'm going to start with today (Sunday) and go backwards into last week to splain why the title. Normally we have groups come to stay with us from out of town and their schedule is to travel on the weekends to and from and work with us Monday thru Friday. This week, however, we welcomed a group of Baptist men from Mobile, Alabama. They arrived on Friday and will leave on Wednesday and planned to work on Saturday (all day) and today (1/2 day after church). I got tagged to work Sat and Sunday with them. Actually, for the half day today, Jared asked them to help me out at the Lion's Den, so I was grateful for that. One of the guys in the group is an excellent roofer and he installed the last of the metal roof and trim pieces. Also trimmed back the mimosa tree that was choking the crepe myrtle out front while he was up there. Young Lester (76) dug the trench from the bath house, across the gravel road and up to the tie-in for the 3/4" pex water supply line. I'm going to branch off that too for a supply for our future RV-Caravanner spots. Last week, too, friend Doug Brushaber was here volunteering with us and he hooked up the electric panel breakers in the evenings. Nice and neat. And there is space for the two 30 amp hookups for the RVers. Future. So, the rest of us worked on finishing hanging the drywall in the crooked old and straight new walls of the Lion's Den. Where they meet was interesting. I pity the finish guy. It used to was gonna be me, but I spoke with Ricky, the man we subcontract Habitat's drywall hanging and finishing to and he gave me a reasonable price such that I don't have to spend the next three weeks doing a terrible job on the drywall myself. He's going to bring in his crew and bad-a-bing-bad-a-boom it will be ready to paint in one day. Bite the bullet and pay the man. Still hope for August move-in.
The other group that came out to help on the Jemison's home on Saturday was young folks fromTrinity Presbyterian church in Northport here . Asst. Pastor Dave Driskill and their church has been housing out of town volunteers in their church for over a year now. Dave normally comes out for our Monday meetings when groups are staying at his church. Saturday he worked all day with his peeps. They installed the 1/8" plate steel at the safe room, followed by the two layers of 3/4" thick plywood. One young lady, Katherine, was working so hard, I was amazed. The plywood on the safe rooms is installed with 4 1/2" self tapping screws which the battery drills that we have just don't drive them. So we use bigger, corded drills, which if youre not carefull will take you for a ride, the torque is so strong. You gotta hang onto it. She owned that drill. Didn't stop all day. I was impressed. I asked her if she would become my daughter-in-law.
On a sadder note, we had our first real injury this past week. One lady from Georgia stepped on a deck board that wasn't fastened yet and fell off the soon to be front porch and broke her ankle. I felt so bad for her. It required surgery and a pin and she is now recovering. I still feel bad.
The two houses in Brookwood that we are building are both dangerously close to completion. Paul Kemp, a long-term volunteer from Maryland who has been with us 4 months has done a great job bringing David Cooks home this far. Pete DeWorken, staff member whose last week with us was last week took the other home for Robert Johnson to the finish line. I havent personally been out to either house much. I'm an Alberta City guy. Finishing is tough though, I thought. Hey, look, three different pronunciations of ou. Who made this english language anyway? That's all for now. See ya next week... Peter
