Back to T-Town and sniff, sniff

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States
Back on the ground in T-town from the Millard Fuller Legacy Build in Atlantic City, NJ. got back in time for the big bye-bye party (sniff, sniff) for our NCCC team who have been with us for the past ten weeks helping us build houses here. The party was held at the Y's Acres, our volunteer camp and the highlight of it was a huge bonfire in the middle of the field there. I had called our buddies at the Fire station but they couldn't help us since it is outside the city limits. I was a little worried that we might set the woods on fire around the field, particularily when the wind was blowing the little embers over in that direction. I had scuffed up the grass around the area with the skidsteer to create a "moat" so as to not catch the grass, but the embers travelled above that pretty well by the wind. Turned our alright though and we didn't catch the forest on fire. It's sad to see these teams leave. You just get to know them and they just get to know what they're doing and then, whoop, gotta go. Fortunately, we have a new team coming in a few weeks and our NCCC withdrawl symptoms shouldn't be too bad.
We have two new homes coming out of the ground this week and another whose exterior is near complete and will be moving inside after the drywall sub is complete . Good rainy day activity. The house I will be watching is #21 Juanita drive. This one will be on a raised slab (of concrete) so we have a few more days of subcontractor work before volunteers can start. The blockwork is completed but it will be backfilled with sand and then the plumbers roughs in his drain and water lines, gets inspected and then Rocky (concrete sub) comes back to pour the slab. Then the walls can start to go up. Friday was a rain day, so we picked up all of the top and bottom plate material and headed off to the warehouse with Stephen and the Mennonites anddid layout for the two new babies in the calm of the warehouse, without multitudes of volunteers awaiting instruction. Nice conditions when you have to think.
This Saturday, I will be hosting a group of friends of Kit Morgan, who wanted to celebrate her birthday by working at a Habitat site with her friends and family. I understand from Jared, our volunteer coordinator that about 15 people have signed up. Kit and I both attend Capstone Church here in Tuscaloosa.
Yesterday, Saaturday, we had the day off and I used it to complete the planter at the Lion's Den which is now masking the old foundation. Today after church, planted a bunch of flares in the new planter to commerorate Mother's Day, especially for my Mom who is no longer on the earth with us, but I imagine that she can see them from where she is.
Two RV Care-A-Vanners due in this week for two weeks. Randy and Pam (fellow Virginians) and Colonel Jim is coming back too I hear with his wife with him this time.
Gonna be rough with no N-Tripps but, oh well, we keep on truckin'.
Happy Mother's Day to all!   Out.
