The Spring Breakers keep coming!

Sunday, March 23, 2014
Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States
So we are working on four houses at a time here now to keep up with the multitudes of spring breakers that are joining us in March to help rebuild Tuscaloosa. Two are nearly done, Constances home in the west end at 2710 18th is being wrapped up under Joey Crimmins leadership. Kathy Pickens new home at 20 Juanita Drive is also coming down the home stretch and is being co-led by John and Alex. The other two homes were both started at the same time, about 3 weeks ago. One is being led by Stephen Scott, who has announced that he will be leaving us on April 15 and this will be his last home in T-Town. The last of the four is the new home for DeQuisha and Delano at 12 Juanita Drive. It's important to know that these last two homes are not competing with each other.
The two main groups with us this past week were a group of HS kids from Tyngsboro, Mass . The other large group was from Montgomery College in Maryland. Both groups stayed at our volunteer camp and stretched the capacity a bit with 42 total staying in a 40 capacity area. Thanks guys!
We also had a couple of onesies. Phil from Wisconsin and Kay from neighboring Minnesota. Both are with us from the Global Village experiences. Phil helped out a lot with leading 4 or 5 of the Tyngsboro folks and they completely built a storage building for what will be a new home that is billed as our Faith Build. It will be sponsored and built by 15 of the local churches here. We had the groundbreaking ceremony this past Thursday.
Upcoming special builds also include a Women's Build (gotta dig out my red dress) and a house sponsored by local businesses.
Trying to have DeQuisha's home substantially complete before I head off for 2 weeks up in Luuuhville, Kentucky for the Millard Fuller Legacy Build. 10 rehabs and 2 new homes in 5 days. heding down April 1 to help prebuild the week before and then build from April 6-13.
Frederick, Md group with Chuck is back this week, minus Jeannie Kozak! Also Mizzou and Univ of Illinois. We should be able to get it close before next week. Wish me luck and good volunteers.
That's all for this week-   Love you all!   Peter

Peter - Here is info about a mission trip that you may want to attend while you are in Kentucky. Email me at sseithers@gmail.com and let me know if you are interested. Bettye Burns and Diane James from Lexington, KY will also be there for part of the time!
I am excited about our upcoming trip 04/06/14 thru 04/12/06! I have several items I need to update you on. And if you, or others, haven't signed up, and would like to help, that would be great - just let me know by email!

There has been a change in location as to where we will be staying! We will be staying at the Beulahland Baptist Church Camp just outside of Frenchburg, KY. Greg Dike, Habitat for Humanity Manager, would like for us to build a house from the crawl space up in Means, KY, and to work on a house under roof between Frenchburg and West Liberty, and possibly work on some houses under roof in West Liberty, KY.

The Church Camp is located at 180 Bible Camp Ln, Frenchburg, KY 40322. To get there from Lexington, please take I-64 East to the Owingsville Exit Number 121. Turn right onto Route 36 and travel approximately 17 miles to Frenchburg, KY. Turn right on Bible Camp Ln, which is located just before a Shell Gas Station as you are driving into Frenchburg. Drive less than a quarter mile on Bible Camp Rd and Beulahland Baptist Church Camp is at the end of the road in its own valley or hollow. If the gate to the Camp, and next to Otis and Lyn Stevens' house, is closed, just lift and push the gate open as it is not locked. Note the Church Camp is 65 miles from Lexington and you can drive it in approximately 1 hour and ten minutes.

For those of you coming up for the day or for a few days, please meet at the church camp the night before you are working or at 8:00 AM the day you are working to prepare sack lunches and get instructions on where we will be working for the day. We will leave the camp at approximately 8:30 AM for the various sites. If you are running late, call me or Becki Thompson (she has a flip phone and better service at 859-338-6298) and we will give you directions on where we are working. I will mention that the Means KY Habitat House site is on Route 460 West (towards Mount Sterling), on the right just past an X-Cess Storage Company that has kelly green doors with white trim. (To get to 460 West, turn right out of Bible Camp Lane onto Route 36 South and at the Courthouse/Subway corner, turn right onto Route 460 West.)

If you would like to stay all week, from Sunday afternoon, 4/06 through Saturday afternoon, 4/12/14, then you are welcome to ride on the Crestwood Christian Church Van. We will meet and load the white colored van on Sunday afternoon, 4/06/14, at 3:00 PM at Crestwood Christian Church south parking lot - 1882 Bellefonte Drive, Lexington, KY 40503. We will return on Saturday evening, 04/12/14. You may leave your car in the Crestwood parking lot for the week if you like.

There are four cabins, a 4 stall men's, 4 stall women's bathhouse with the same number of showers, a dining hall with kitchen and half bath. and an outdoor brick grill. The cabins have six double bunk beds, thus can sleep 12 people. The two cabins near the bathhouse - one cabin (the one labelled "Womens") will be co-ed, one will be for snorers. The two cabins 50 yards away - one is for Bettye Burns and friends, whereas the other cabin is up for grabs for anyone who would like to have some privacy. The cabins will have space heaters for heat and window fans for cool. Some can sleep in the dining hall on the stage if they wish (please bring your own air mattress fpr the stage). There is not a dishwasher, so we will probably be eating most meals on paper plates.

LaVece Hughes, and a friend of hers, will be our cooks for the week! If you have not eaten one of LaVece's meals, then you have not eaten great down home food. There is a Cornbread Cafe (with two TV's) close to the Shell Station, a Subway, and various foods at gas stations in town. An IGA Grocery is also near the Shell St
