Just a note: I've finally uploaded a number of photos for previous days.
Sally, Anne and I left Le Manoir at 7:30am this morning for the short walk to the local boulangerie where we bought baguettes, croissants, pain au chocolat and almond pastries
. We plan to do this every day that we are here.
After breakfast, we all packed in one of the minivans and drove 15 minutes to Rouffignac where there was a food market. Unlike the market in Sarlat-le-Canéda, this market caters mainly to locals rather than the tourists. We bought food to make a salad for our dinner later in the day together with olives, more bread and fruit. We returned to Le Manoir to store the food and then drove for 30 minutes into Sarlat-le-Canéda.
Sarlat is a medieval town that modern history has largely passed by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. It owes its current status on France's Tentative List for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site to the enthusiasm of writer, resistance fighter and politician André Malraux who, as Minister of Culture (1960–1969), restored the town and many other sites of historic significance throughout France
. The centre of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is largely car-free. (Thanks to wikipedia).
We walked around the town which has many winding alleyways and beautiful buildings. It was very hot so we were delighted to find a pleasant restaurant situated in a secluded courtyard where we had another long leisurely lunch with two bottles of wine.
Rather than visiting a few other villages nearby, we decided to do that another day. Instead, we decided to return to the Le Manoir and have some "down" time. Several of us lounged around the pool.
Later we went back into the kitchen of Le Manoir and had a delightful casual dinner of bread, cheese, salad, olives, fruits, deserts and lots of wine!
