Road Trip

Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico
Early morning, Monday, February 12, had us jumping in the truck to make a quick trip to Mazatlan.  Now, let's be clear, the time spent in Maz would be quick, the drive, not so much!  It is a eight hour drive, with no issues.  Although they are making great strides on the road construction, well, there are some sections that require a lot of attention and patience while behind the wheel.  That is something that Mexicans do not possess in great quantities! Most everything in Mexico is manana, manana.......put them behind the wheel of a vehicle ---- look out!  There is a reason there are a lot of roadside shrines!
The road between San Carlos and Mazatlan is very interesting as you travel through the agricultural belt.  Lots to see and there are a few towns that would be neat to explore if you have the time.  Maybe next year!  Our purpose to travel to Mazatlan was twofold, our friends the Paolucci's were vacationing there and we are considering it as a destination for next winter.
Our first day in Maz we jumped on a tour hosted by City Tours Pumonia.  Polmonias are traditionally a Volkswagen vehicle that are unique to Mazatlan.  Our guide, Freddy wasn't sure how the tour would go as it was the last day of Carnival in Maz, so a lot of the streets were blocked off.  However, thanks to the unique style of "tipping" in Mexico, we pretty much had the Malecon to ourselves.  It was great tour as we got to see a lot of sights, understand the layout of the city and enjoy some things that are unique to Mazatlan.
After the tour we stopped in to visit some other people we know, Margie and Bill.  They have been spending the past several winters in Mazatlan, so they were a font of information.  They drove is around, took us to a fabulous lunch spot and helped us to understand a bit more about the areas in Mazatlan.  Sue has known Margie for many years, as she lived across the street and used to babysit her kids in Airdire.
While in Maz we also looked at some properties to rent for next winter.  We think this will be our destination for next winter.  Maz is a vibrant city with lots to do and see in the surrounding area.  One of the other things that appeals is the 4 1/2 hour flight from Calgary.  All in all it was a short trip, but very interesting.  Also good to connect with friends. After 3 days we jumped back in the truck and headed home to San Carlos.
Friday we went with friends, Ross and Darlene to the Pearl Farm.  It is an interesting tour.  They grow pearls that are specific to a type of oyster only found in the Sea of Cortez.  These pearls are different in colour, shape and size.  Here is a link to the video about the farm.  No, did not purchase any pearls.  One, Sue not a big jewelry wearer and two, these are rare pearls and the price reflects that!
Sunday was the annual "Gilbert" Golf Tournament.  Gilbert is a Jack Russell Terrier who has been a resident of the golf course for many years.  His original owner passed away and he has been looked after by the course owner and many of the residents in the community.  He is a bit worse for wear, to say the least.  However, the tournament is a lot of fun.  They have been running it for many years, using the funds raised to put 2 kids through school (both are now in university), and supporting the local SPBA.  Each hole is sponsored by a pet owner and there is something interesting at each hole.  They have been very creative on how you can putt the ball!  It was good fun!
Sunday night was used to finish packing as we are off to Ecuador in the morning.  We are flying back for a visit and to attend our god daughter's high school graduation.  Should be interesting!  Will keep you posted!
