Pink Flamingos

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Canary Islands
Sadly today we left our little villa in the medieval square of Cucuron . We loved Cucuron and the area around it. Full of everything that signifies Provence - lavender, sunflowers, olives, almonds, oak tree groves (for truffles), and stone walls and houses. The boulangeries and fromageries were too good!

Luckily for us today was market day in Cucuron so we stocked up on bread, cheese (Comte), delicious fruit and tomatoes before we drove to the camargue which is only 1 1/2 hours south at the bottom of France . It is a huge wetland (1000ha) that is one of the overwintering sites for migratory birds and also a natural habitat for flamingos. We spent a couple of hours in the 33 degree heat walking around a nature park watching flocks of flamingos wading in the water, sleeping standing on one leg or looking after their nests on a small island. Also saw herons and other small birds. The park would be amazing in winter but was still fantastic seeing all the flocks of flamingos. We had our Cucuron picnic in the shade.

After we navigated our way to Nimes and had a stressful 15 minutes trying to find the Nimes railway station parking place - found it and had plenty of time before our train to Barcelona (3.45min) and arrived 7.30pm in Barcelona. Hot in Barcelona but great feel about the place. We took a taxi to our apartment which is on the ground floor of an apartment block with an outside terrace. lots of people and families out on the streets sitting, drinking cervezas, talking, and eating sunflower seeds etc.
