Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
We woke up a bit late today, had a quick bite on the way to the old city of Edinburgh. When we got there, we joined a guided walking tour of the Royal Mile - a 1-mile long street that connects a Royal Palace and Edinburgh Castle. We learned a lot of interesting things about the buildings of the street, it's little side-streets called "closes" and the history of the city. The city was shaped by the terrain it is located on: an old volcanic rock, scraped by some glaciers to the bone during the last ice age. The main street of Edinburgh is built on top of the spine of the rock with the side streets, closes, running down the sides of the rock. This interesting formation defined the shape of the city, its culture and history.
After the tour tour we visited St . Giles cathedral and then walked down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace, which becomes the royal residence whenever the Queen visits Scotland. On the way to the palace we saw the Scottish Parliament, an amazing modern building.
As the sun set we walked to New Town, the part of town designed in 18th century. It was the first grid-based city layout! This part of the city was build specifically for rich people, so each building looks amazing. We had dinner there, then tried to find a pub with live music, but failed and went back to the hotel.
