Tokyo day 0: Shinjuku

Tokyo, Kanto, Japan
The first part of the day we spent to get to the hotel in Tokyo: first we walked to the train station in Gero, then rode an express train to Nagoya, switch to shinkansen (bullet train) to Tokyo, then took another express train from Tokyo station to Shinjuku station and walked to the hotel.

Shinjuku district has an interesting contrast between east and west sides of the station: one side is full of elegant glass skyscrapers and sharply dressed business people, and another side is mostly bars, nightclubs, hostess and host bars . There is also Kabukicho - a rough seedy red lights district, which is marked on the travel website as "explore with caution"; also there's Golden Gai - a small area of Kabukicho packed with tiny bars (some only seat 3-5 customers).

After we checked into the hotel and found our tiny room (the smallest in this trip), we went for a walk around the area. We checked out Kabukicho area, eyed host club ads (I think we might have seen one or two actual hosts as well), then found the funky Don Quijote store that sells a large selection of items (groceries, clothing, travel accessories, costumes, adult toys, children's toys, etc.). We also walked around a big electronics shop, checked out various cameras and so on. Then we visited the skyscraper district, with its glass towers and businessmen, took a look from an observation deck (45th floor) on Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office. After we snapped some photos of Tokyo after dark from above, we took an elevator down and had some dinner at a hot pot restaurant. Then we tried to buy tickets for Studio Ghibli Museum at Lawson store's ticket machine, but they were all sold out for all our days in Tokyo. Then we walked back to the hotel, checked out colourful illumination at Kabukicho at night with crowds moving all around it. We also dropped by Golden Gai area, peeked into some of the tiny bars and finally went back to the hotel.
