There are some people you can just talk to. It doesn't matter that you haven't seen them for years (fourteen in this case), you can just fall back into conversation like it was yesterday. Debs and I went to university together and have kept in touch ever since.
Last time we met was the year I got married - scary thought! Since then, we've had six kids between us, and four of them raced around the house and garden, getting on like they had known each other forever
. There were chickens and guinea-pigs, a cat and, most fun of all, an apple-tree with a scaffolding climbing frame, just right to be used as a fireman's pole.
Debs and John treated us to lunch and we put the world to rights for a few hours. I had to drag everyone away mid-afternoon, as no-one wanted it to end. The kids even hid under the bed and in the wardrobe, but in the end we had to say goodbye, with a promise that we won't leave it quite so long next time.
