Mountains, and Mountains of Ice

Qaqortoq, Greenland
We got up early (6:00 AM) because we were to have narrated scenic cruising of the Prins Christian Sund beginning at 6:30 AM. The southern end of Greenland consists of many large and small islands with a complex network of narrow channels and fjords. We could already see mountains out of our cabin window when we got up and the narration started, as promised, at 6:30. As it turned out, we were unable to transit the sund proper, as ice conditions prevented it, but the fjords and channels we were able to sail through were beautiful. Karl and I had breakfast in the Lido buffet watching the scenery out the window and then we got our coats and went outside. It was really pretty chilly outdoors and you could see everything and hear the narration in the Crow's Nest Bar at the front of the ship, so we moved there. When there was something particularly scenic, I could step outside for a photo. Mid-morning we passed the small fishing village of Aappilattorq and then they turned the ship around and headed south, rather than east through the sund. At 11:00 AM they served Dutch pea soup on all of the outside decks and in the Crow's Nest. It was nice and thick, and very good.

Since we had gotten up early and had an early breakfast, we ate a fairly early lunch . We had pretty much seen all the pretty scenery (we thought!) and so Karl and I went to the geologist's talk about what we were seeing. Then Karl decided to take a nap and I went to the gym. The gym on the ship is just below the Crow's Nest Bar, so you have a pretty good view. I was on the stationary bike for just about 5 minutes when I decided that where I needed to be was outside with my camera! We had exited the fjords and channels of Greenland and entered the Greenland Ice Field. I had never seen anything like it -- miles and miles of icebergs surrounding the ship as far as you could see. It was amazing! Hard to believe it was safe to sail through waters filled with large and small icebergs like that. I went to our room to get my coat and my camera and told Karl where I would be. In just a few minutes he joined me and we wandered from one deck to the next, ending up on the bow of the ship, which they had opened for the day. It seemed that everyone was out on the open decks -- passengers and crew alike. We heard from others who had taken this cruise before that the passage through the ice field was a new experience -- clearly not something done on every cruise through this area. The whole afternoon and early evening was spent sailing very slowly through the ice field.

We had dinner in the dining room and went to the show, which was a repeat of two performers who had had shows earlier: The FlyBoys and Benji Hill. We enjoyed Benji, a comedian juggler and actually thought the FlyBoys were better in this show as well. We had gotten up so early that we decided to call it a night after the show.
