We Sail Prins Christian Sund

Nanortalik, Greenland
We had one day at sea before the scenic cruising of Prins Christian Sund. The seas were still very rough with high waves, high winds and big swells. That meant that Karl pretty much stayed in our cabin. My big event for the day was the hands-on cooking class. We were making Shrimp Bruschetta, Steak Diane, and Chocolate Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce. As always, I enjoyed the class and the lunch of the dishes we had made (with wine) that followed. That meant, though, that there was no way I could eat an early dinner. Karl wasn't going to the dining room anyway with the rough seas. And they were really rough – so rough, in fact, that the waves twice washed up and over our windows. And we are on deck 4! We decided to try going to the early movie. Karl was able to watch a movie the other night when it was rough. The movie was "While We’re Young" about a 40-something couple who made friends with a younger couple. It was a little strange, but not so bad that we felt we had to leave. We didn’t go to the show because we had seen the performer, Bettine Clemen, on the Rotterdam earlier this year. Besides we were scheduled to enter Prins Christian Sund at 7:00 AM and wanted to get up early. The last time we came through this way, we did not enter the Sund proper as ice conditions did not allow, so we hoped to be able to see it this time.

We did get up early – at about 6:30 – and we were out and about a little after 7:00 AM . I took a few photos outside on deck 12 and then we looked for a place inside where we could see and hear the narration. It was cold but just partly cloudy, so the views were really nice early in the day. The Sund is a very narrow passage (as narrow as about 1000 feet) with mainland Greenland on one side and Greenland islands on the other. On the mainland side there were several places where glaciers that are part of the Greenland ice cap reach the Sund. The Greenland ice cap is second only to Antarctica in size. There were also some icebergs in the water, but nothing like we saw when we sailed through the Greenland ice field. We thought the captain did a really nice job of making sure that everyone got a chance to see the glaciers. If it was possible he did a complete 360 degree turn so that every side of the ship faced the glacier before sailing on. After completing our transit of Prins Christian Sund, we took the same route out of the islands and back to the sea that we had taken in when we were here in Greenland before on this cruise . So we passed the same small village, Aappilattoq, with a population of about 130 people. This time the ship put down a tender when we were near the village to collect a small iceberg to bring onto the ship, so people could actually touch one. At the same time, small boats from the village came to the ship. One of them was loaded by the ship’s crew with fresh fruit (pineapples and watermelons) for the villagers. The other boats were just there to greet us. A couple of them had whole families in them out to see the people on the big ship. They were taking picture of us while we were taking pictures of them.

The narration and scenic sailing lasted until mid-afternoon. I spent quite a bit of the time on the Lido deck working on this blog. That way I could still see the scenery and step outside for a photo if I wanted to. They were having another Heritage dinner in the Lido buffet with food from Indonesia and the Philippines. We enjoyed it the last time, so we decided to have an early dinner there and then go to the early movie (“The Longest Ride”, a romance about a bull-rider and an art student) and the late show in the showroom. The show was The Alley Cats, a Doo-Wop group that sang songs from the 50’s and 60’s. We enjoyed both the movie and the show.

The cruise director, Christina, told us that the rush for the tenders in Nanortalik tomorrow would be around 9:00 AM, so Karl and I decided to get up early to beat the rush.
