Te Anau, Southland, New Zealand
Southern Scenic Route Drive, one of the top ten road trips in the world. The 389-mile road goes from Queenstown to Dunedin. Deserted beaches, native forests, rolling hills, snow-covered peaks, waterfalls, lakes and sounds make this the best of the South Island.
Doing the first part from Queensland > TeAnau about two hours. A two-lane road wound through repeated S-curves with Remarkables Mountains looming above.
Pretty along Lake Wakatipu and nice dive through farmland-type scenery.

CAMP  TE ANAU TOP 10  - 4 nights
Excellent location, just across the road from the main street in town.
Warm weather while here: 82 degrees. Nights cooled off; used heater
Te Anau is a tiny town on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau in Fiordland with stunning alpine and lake views. Everyplace had beautiful flowers; lots of roses and hydrangeas.
Perfect place for exploring Milford Sound since the road to the sound starts here.
Spent a relaxing day walking around town. Stopped for ice cream and meat pies, which were not very good.
SIGHTSEEING in TeAnau:

TeAnau Glowworm Caves
(Feb 19)
Started with a great boat ride across the lake to the incredible wonders of nature inside the limestone cave system.
Guides led us to the magnificent underground boardwalk passageway, where waterfalls tumbled over finely polished stalagmites.
When the lights were turned off, the display of twinkling lights produced by the thousands of little beetle larvae was jaw dropping. Like looking at a black sky full of stars. Magic! It's really the illumination is from the same bio-luminescence found in fireflies.

Keppler Track
:  (Feb 21)
One of the great NZ hikes, a total of 37 miles that takes most people 3-4 days.
A short day walk was our limit. Starting at Te Anau's control gates, a nice walk alongside the beautiful lakeside and through the ancient beech forest full of moss and ferns.
Very easy and thoroughly enjoyable.
Places we Ate:
Ranch: rump steak and roast lamb. Excellent dinners!
Bakery: yummy carrot cake and chocolate croissant.
