Franz Josef Glacier, West Coast, New Zealand
Haast Highway (Hwy-6): Spectacular scenic road along South Island's West Coast:
Knights Point: Lookout to Arnott Point. Impressive view of the beautiful coastline.
Highway went along the entire edge of Lake Moeraki, a pretty little lake bordered by rainforest and tree ferns.

FRANZ JOSEF - MOUNTAIN VIEW TOP 10
What a view of the glacier from our camper!
Tour Company in Town to inquire about Franz Josef Glacier Tour.
Our college-aged niece was here and recommended the glacier walk. We are far past our twenties and wondered how difficult it would be for us. The tour office in town suggested walking on our own, about a mile, to the Glacier Terminal Face where the tour groups could be observed going up the glacier. Sounds like a good plan so off we went.
Glacier Viewpoint Walk:  Relatively flat with several lookout points along the wide river stone track, passing a rushing river with a wonderful waterfall, and then to the terminal face.

Pretty cool seeing an ice cave with the water dripping.

Roped off area allowed a pretty impressive view of the glacier ice face.

Watched the tour groups climbing the steep ice stairs in crampons up the glacier. Immediately, knew that I would never make it up that many very steep ice steps.

Helicopter was the only way I'd ever see blue ice on a glacier. So glad we did this very worthwhile hike!  Went in town and booked a Heli-Hike trip for tomorrow.
The poster of a lady inside a huge ice cave sparked the imagination of what we might see.
