WHANGAREI: ReidKauri Park, Whangarei Falls

Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand
Close to noon by the time we left Coromandel for the drive north up the West Coast.
Such great views of the Coromandel Peninsula that we kept stopping to admire the beauty.

Fabulous coastal drive: ocean on the right, the mountain edge next to the road on the left. Sometimes not enough room for two lanes. Their solution - don't paint the middle line. Cool knarly trees as we got further north, and more of a rocky shore.

Drove way too long, almost 5 hours!
WHANGAREI TOP 10 HOLIDAY PARK
About 6:30 when we arrived.
Realized I lost my glasses at Driving Creek Railway. Called, hurray they found them. Such nice people. Mailing them to the Auckland campground we'll be staying.
3-22:  A.H.Reid Kauri Park & Whangarei Falls
Great morning for this delightful Canopy Walk with a boardwalk high above the forest floor through magnificent remnant of the original Northland kauri forest. Up close to massive kauri trees, some known to be at least 500 years old.

Walk continued along the bubbling Wai Koromiko Stream on to Whangarei Falls.

Very picturesque with 85-ft drop over the basalt cliffs. Met very interesting people from this area. Sat around the picnic table hearing about the early logging days. Dams were built, then broke in order to float the Kauri trees to Auckland. The man's dad built his childhood home out of dam timber and the roof was fern palms. Interesting "old timers" that enjoyed sharing their stories of this area with us.
