By Matapouri at Sandy Bay could see Poor Knights Islands, a Marine Nature Reserve about 14 miles off shore. One of the world's premium dive destinations we comtemplated going on a dive boat here. Weather not great: cloudy and cold with some rain. Used the binoculars to check out the dive boat out there--lots of rocking. Not keen on getting seasick and neither of is enthusiastic about the 64o water temperature. Continued the drive north.

Enjoyed sitting at the picnic table talking with a young couple from England parked in front of us. Even great at night with all the city lights twinkling below and across the bay.

Plaque explained the significance in NZ history. The flagstaff itself contains part of the last flagstaff that was chopped down during the disputes between Maori and the governing English.
