Hwy 12:  Overlook above Oponani Waipoua Forest; great view.

Beautiful drive to Tane Mahuta, a giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest. Name means God of the Forest in Māori. Its age is unknown but is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. The largest kauri known to stand today.
Waipoua Forest Info Center:  Road was really bad. Some places only one lane and the road was falling away. Scary, but we made it! Interesting exhibition on the kauri forests.
MATAKOE TOP 10 HOLIDAY PARK
Town: Nelson's Woodworking, which had really nice pieces and the best prices we've seen.  Found a store with gloves made of merino wool and possum hair, which are supposed to be the best for warmth and wicking water.
Poured all night.
