Took the "Low Road to Taos" that runs along the Rio Grande River. Nice two-lane highway drive through the mountains. Highlights: artistic designs on the Overpassed by the neat little towns., old stone church before Espanola, rafters along Rio Grande, Rio Grande Gorge Visitors' Center. Great scenic drive! (About 3.5 hours)

"ENCHANTED CIRCLE" DRIVE:
Spent the afternoon driving clockwise around the 85-mile loop through Carson National Forest, mountains, valleys, mesa. Great mountain views along the long stretch of road approaching Questa. Stopped in numerous places:
Red River is bustling old-west looking town. Lots of people in the open air restaurants.
Vietnam Memorial. The memorial was built to honor those who served, promote healing, and provide education. Wonderful Veterans Walkway, Chapel, and Visitors’ Center.
Wanted to drive up to Angel Fire; however, road construction blocked off one lane creating a huge traffic backup. Decided it wasn't worth the wait.
This was a nice drive, but not as scenic as anticipated.

Short drive from Taos is Ranchos de Taos, the location of San Francisco de Asis. This 18th century mission church is the subject of many paintings of this area. 5:00 and they just closed the doors so didn't get to see inside.
The restaurant we wanted to go to was closed because there was a gas leak that shut down an entire block, which created a huge traffic jam through Taos.
Orlando's restaurant was recommended; 50-min wait; nice patio area. Ordered three different kinds of enchiladas, pork tamale, chile relleno which was way too spicy. Food ok; wouldn't eat here again.

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge: Visitor center with lots of parking and good views. Walking across the bridge with the river 650 below is pretty cool. Slight haze in the sky from the fires west of here so sunsets were not the best.
After all the driving today, ready to sit and star gaze, Just ok tonight; not billions like it can be in this area.

8/6: Taos Plaza first thing this morning before it gets crowded. Nothing opened, only a few people. Great time for pictures and walking around. The bronze cross in the center of the plaza honors the men from Taos County who died on the Bataan Peninsula during WWII.
This is an artists' town so walking the streets is a must. Very interesting architecture, galleries, unique artwork. Impressive huge wall painting "Santeria de Nuevo Mexico" by George Chacon, which is a true form of the first new indigenous art that developed in what was to be called the New World by the new Spanish Europeans. Great town for window shopping.

Drove to Taos Pueblo, but it's closed because of Covid. A reason to come back.
Time to get back to the rv and head north.
