Many Glacier: Boat & Grinnell Lake Hike

Many Glacier Hotel, Montana, United States
MANY GLACIER area is in the northeast part of the national park. Came here three different days. Some of the most epic scenery in the park!
Many Glacier Road (route 3):  The dirt road to the Glacier Park entrance gate was under construction. There was always a 30-50 minute wait for the construction to repair the road. Took about 1.5 horrs to get to the hotel.  Definitely a scenic drive along fast-moving Swiftcurrent Creek and Lake Sherburne formed by the dam to control the flow of the creek.

Surprised there was never a ranger at the entrance gate. The road was paved from here to the end.
Many Glacier Hotel: The parking lot is above the hotel. Walked along the road to the bridge above the little falls.

The Many Glacier area is often compared to Switzerland and the Swiss Alps. Seemed like we were in the Alps upon arrival at the beautiful Swiss-chalet style hotel sitting on Swiftcurrent Lake surrounded by mountains. STUNNING!

Impressive lobby with wood beams and a crackling fire in the massive fire place.  Definitely the best lodge location in the park. The day we came with Wally & Maribel for a hike it was drizzly rain so it was really nice sitting in the lobby by the fireplace.
Restaurant has large windows overlooking Swiftwater Lake. The take-out was open so we were happy to get a bite to eat.
8/23:  Boat & Lake Grinnell Hike
Made reservations several days ago with Glacier Park Boat Co. No morning ones available. Lucky to get four reservations for today at 1:30. The wind was really whipping as we boarded at the dock behind the hotel.

While crossing the lakes, the boat guide told about the park's history, the geology of the area, and different mountains we were seeing. Then a short hike to the another boat that crossed Lake Josephine. More fabulous scenery!
Hike to Grinnell Lake: Shortly after starting, there is a fork in the trail. We took the trail to Grinnell Lake. The other trail goes up the mountain to Grinnell Glacier. Would have liked to have done this but knew we needed all day.
Started to sprinkle, then stopped and got nice, but not much sun.
Path through the forest with tons of thimbleberry bushes. Felt like we were bear bait.

Suspension footbridge over Cataract Creek. Could hear the water gushing down the rocks.

Along the path above the creek, saw two moose about 100 feet away.
One walked toward us a bit so had good views of its huge rack.

Series of wooden boardwalks over a few sensitive boggy areas. Randy stepped right through a rotten board and hurt his ankle a bit.
Grinnell Lake is BEAUTIFUL!
Walked around the beach enjoying the views of the turquoise clear water beneath towering peaks on the Continental and a gorgeous waterfall coming down the mountain slope.

This piece of paradise was pretty easy to get to compared to some of the other hikes.

Saw two deer  right next to the trail on the way back to the boat dock.

The sky got really dark as we crossed the lakes.
As we got off the boat, it started pouring and there was tiny hail blowing like crazy. Made a mad dash to get inside the hotel. Just as everyone got in the door, it stopped. So strange, a 1-minute hail storm enough to almost blow us away. Guess the weather here really does change from one minute to the next.

Driving out a mama bear with cub about half way up the mountain. Needed binoculars; too far to get a decent picture with the zoom. The Many area reports more animal sightings that other areas of the park. We saw more today than any other day in the park. Of course, there were significantly less people.
Headed back to Saint Mary planning to have pizza at Rising Sun restaurant; however, it was jammed packed and the wait was too long. Good thing for leftovers.
