Vossevangen, Vestland, Norway
Another cool tunnel on drive from Flam to Undredal with with lights changing different colors in the middle.
Undredal:  Saw this picturesque fishing village on the banks of the Aurlandsfjorden from the fjord cruise, but stopping here to walk around the sleepy fairytale town early in the morning was truly one of our special Norway moments.

Famous for the goat cheese made in the village, which has a population of about 60. Walked the deserted streets until the café opened that sells cheese.

"This landscape is unique from any other part of the world--mountain farms, deep fjord, wooden buildings."

Undredal Church was built as a stave church in 1147 and supposedly is the smallest one in Scandinavia that remains in use. Unfortunately, it was not open so didn't get to go inside. Its white clapboard sidings gave it a different look from the stave churches we have seen so far.

The wonderful clerk at the café explained all about the cheeses. Bought two different aged cheeses plus some brown cheese, which we wanted to try even though it looks sort of gross.

Undredal Brygge, incredible scenic spot on the point.
Definitely looks like a storybook village!
Gudvangen - Njardarheim Viking Village "sits high above Nærøyfjord (dedicated to Njord, God of Trading and Sailing). Vikings travelled far and wide throughout Europe over one thousand years ago conquering vasts amount of territory, and they even ruled Norway at one point."

"Viking Experience" 45 min, guided tour included with ticket.  This recreation of an authentic Viking village gave a glimpse into what life in the Viking valley was like.

Really interesting having these people as guides that are so passionate about the Viking era that they choose to live that way.

Thought it might be more of a kids thing, but we really enjoyed it, although none of us tried the ax throwing. Fun walking around after the tour learning/trying the different crafts and sports

Lunch at their restaurant was quite good: baked potato; sausage & mashed potato.
E16 through the Nærøydalen valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Short stop at Stalheim Hotel. Walked through the lobby rooms filled with impressive antiques to the back yard area viewing platform.

Best view spot of this valley!
Tvindefossen Waterfall
"Fountain of Youth" in Norwegian myths.
Right next to E16, super easy for lots of people to visit. Had it all to ourselves for about 5 minutes (in between tour buses).  Sidewalk path to the 360' waterfall that tumbles in many strands over the rocky mountainside. Not much water so not as impressive as the photos, but still absolutely beautiful--like a bridal veil.
Planned on staying at the campground next to the falls; however, with all the constant people continued farther..
VOSS:  Very nice 5-minute walk to the town center right after we checked into the campground. Saw people with pizza that they said was the best in town. Off we went for dinner. Couldn't believe it was Chicago-style pizza. Great waitress and food.

Visited a few of the historic sights:
In 1023, King Olaf Haraldsen visited Vossevangen to convert the people to Christianity. He erected a weathered cross (Olavskrossento commemorate the local conversion. Voss Cathedral (Vangskyrkja): the stone church was built in 1277.
VOSS CAMPING - 1 night
Well-maintained, gravel sites. Great location beautifully situated among the trees, beside a park along Vangsvatnet Lake.

Sept 1:
Beautiful views of the lake early this morning. Very peaceful walking along the pebble beach at dawn. Gorgeous sky color, low clouds over the mountains, water reelections. Spectacular!

Locked; would have been nice to go inside. Not even a sign. Compensated by going to the bakery.
