Oslo, Oslo, Norway
Purchased Oslo 48-hour Pass, which gave access to most museums and free public transport.
Short walk to Wesslesplass bus stop south side of Parliament building. Morning walks when the streets have almost no people were the Best. Wessels plass especially pretty with fountains, the only ones we've seen that were working. Lots of great architecture.

About half hour bus ride. Interesting seeing other parts of the city.

Bygdøy Peninsula where many museums are located. Walked out to the water until the museum opened. Great water views.  Monument to Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen and his first expedition to reach the South Pole, titled "90 Degrees South" by Norwegian sculptor Håkon Anton Fagerås.

Fram - The Polar Exploration Museum was literally built around the two ships that define Norwegian polar exploration - the Fram and the Gjøa.

Our jaws dropped the minute we walked in the door. Spectacular the way they used colored lights to display the Gjøa.

Second floor: Balcony goes all around with mega displays of photographs and exhibits. Theater with excellent polar introduction movie about the various polar voyages.

Walkway to go on board the ship. So cool being able to walk around on deck and go below. A Northern Lights show every 20 minutes from the main deck. Imagine being surrounded by ice during their polar ship expeditions from 1893-96.

Walkway to the other building that houses the Fram, the first ship to be sailed through entire Northwest Passage by Roald Amundsen and his six companions in 1903-06. It's gigantic.

Amazing storm simulation with thunder, lightening, and huge waves coming up the sides. Felt like really being in one. Finished on deck as a huge tour group came in.

Went below deck through the cabins, galley, engine room, etc.

What a fantastic and interesting museum. Far better than we ever anticipated!
Kon-Tiki museum: Exhibits about the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl and some of his great sea voyages.

World-renowned Kon-Tiki was his most famous. Ran remembers reading about this as a kid. Contained all original rafts, boats & utensils. Mind boggling imagining crossing the ocean in this little raft!
  • This balsa raft carried Thor Heyerdahl and his 5-man crew across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia in 1947. The 8000 km voyage lasted 101 days with the aid of the South-east trade winds wind patterns and ocean currents.
Ra II is also here.
  • Ra II sailed 6100 kil from Morocco to Barbados in 57 days. The longstanding dogma that there could not have been any contact between the Mediterranean region and South or Central America prior to Columbus' discover, was disproved
Maritime Museum: Gift shop had the exact Norway t-shirts we've been looking for. Spent so much time here only looked in one of the museum rooms before it was time to take the bus back.
Prima Fila for dinner on our last night of all being together. Great location on Amundsens gate, the street that leads to City Hall.

Really nice waiter from Italy that just started. Lots of laughs about ordering wine. Good food. Exceptional dessert - crepe with orange Grand Marnier sauce.
Wonderful evening walk admiring the gorgeous buildings lit up at night.
