Regional train from Varenna to Tirano
Good thing we bought tickets in Venice because there isn't anyone at the Varenna train station.

Views are lots of tiered vineyards going up the mountain to beautiful homes.
Every town had beautiful churches whose steeples are visible from miles away.
Quite a few old castles.

TIRANO: This is where the Bernina Express Train starts.
Several hours until the next train.
Nice courtyard area to wait, gelato shop, and stores.
Sale & Pepe for lunch. Very good wood-oven pizza.

BERNINA EXPRESS from Tirano to St. Moritz Best train ride ever
(TIP: The Swiss Pass includes the Bernina Express; however, a reservation is needed. Be sure to validate the Bernina Express ticket at the station before getting on the train).
Beautiful towns nestled in valleys, glaciers towering above ice blue glacial lakes, waterfalls, streams. All along the route explanations are given in several languages over the loudspeaker system, including the cultural history of the Grisons/Graubunden region.

Coming out of the mountain tunnel is a view that really makes you say WOW--valley with the Palu Glacier behind the little Palüsee Lake and then the steep climb to the Bernina Pass.
Before St. Moritz are more snow-capped mountains and the Diavolezza cable car to the Morteratsch Glacier. The beautiful scenery never ends!
ST. MORITZ: Another gorgeous city built up the mountain overlooking the lake.
Arrived here late in afternoon so didn't see much of this area.
Great taxi driver. He explained some of the sights on the drive to the hotel.
St. Moritz is noted for its skiing so winter is the big tourist time. They even hold a Polo Cup tournament on the frozen lake.

HOTEL ARTE - 1 night
No transportation service from train station. It's a long, steep uphill walk that was out of the question to walk with this luggage.
Turned out to be a great place; however, no one was there when we arrived.
A sign was on door to call them. However, we do not have a phone.
Luckily, a couple from Alberta walked in, and they contacted Susanne via their computer.
We heard a phone ring, and the man came out of the restaurant and gave us the key.
Met Susanne later; such a delightful person.
ROOM: very nice; larger than expected; small bathroom. Very clean. Interesting modern frescoes on walls.
Great views of St. Moritz from up where the hotel is located.

Great breakfast--our first place with the Swiss muesli and all the nuts/fruits.
Dinner at Hotel Arte's restaurant --two people told us this is the best pizza in town. Had gnocchi and pizza, which was good.

Broke the camera's lens cover. Luckily, a camera store was nearby so walked there to get a replacement (way more expensive than the US). Very steep hills here. Too tired to do anything else.
