Laikipia, Kenya
Awoke at dawn to the sight of three giraffes, one with a baby, and a white rhino with her baby - love these window walls!

Ava, manager, gave us a tour of kitchen and the gardens. No wonder the food is so good; it's fresh grown. She even gave us some of the delicious recipes.

GUIDES
- AMOS (guide) and JOHN (spotter)
Amos is amazing and he explained so much about the animals and their habits, as well as insects, plants, birds. He just got his silver certificate and is extremely knowledgeable. His love of the African wildlife is contagious. We loved his witty sense of humor, which made our game drives so much fun.
Gained so much knowledge about Rhinos. So glad we came to Solio; learned about their Rhino preservation efforts.
RHINO FACTS: Both male and female have horns, which are made of hair-like keratin fibers pressed together. So sad that they are nearing extinction from poachers killing for their horns.
Difference between a black and white Rhino?
--Thought it would be their color--No color difference.
--Main difference is the shape of their mouths: white rhinos have broad flat lips for grazing;  black rhinos have long pointed lips for eating foliage.
--White rhinos have a very distinct hump above the shoulders and are larger than the black.
--Black rhinos are very solitary and more aggressive
--How's this for a funny story about how the name originated: The Dutch people named the white rhino the "Weid mond rhino", The English thought they were saying "white", so it was all just a misinterpretation of the name.

8:00 GAME DRIVE to airport.
Amos is so funny explaining about the Rhino toilet--they actually have a certain spot.
Hard saying goodbye to Amos and John and leaving this beautiful area.
Every time we see "Famous Amos" cookies, we will think of our time with this fantastic guide!
After leaving the conservancy, drove along the dirt road and then the main road. Quite interesting seeing the different housing areas and the people. So funny to see three people riding on one motorcycle; one even had four people on it.

9:20 arrived at Nanyuk airstrip, which was much larger than anticipated--big restaurant, big groups coming in. Wondered why the trucks all had a number on the back; it's the vehicle's speed limit.
