Hole in The Rock Heritage Center
History of how the Mormon pioneers traveled through this area and the arduous task of getting across the Colorado River. Seeing the pictures and watching the video is a MUST DO; can't imagine doing what they did!

Hole in the Rock Road
Quite an adventurous day following the route of the last major wagon train on their arduous journey. The gravel/dirt road through rock, desert, canyons, and washes beneath the towering cliffs of Fifty Mile Mountain.

Not bad for the first 5 miles; then washboard that got worse as you drove further down the road, eventually into 4WD conditions. This is definitely a road to go on only once; so much shaking from the horrible washboard!

Planned to go the 54 miles to Hole in the Rock. However, about 12 miles short, a steep vertical drop into a sandy wash looked like a recipe for disaster. Better safe than sorry; no AAA here; turned around and headed back stopping at the following:

            STOPS ALONG THE WAY:

Boy Scout Memorial
Very sad to read about the adults and children that lost their lives when the brakes failed and they overturned on the climb up the hill.

Dance Hall Rock
Invokes images of the 250 people waiting here for a month enjoying the music and dancing that this natural stone stage provided.

Dry Fork Wash
Drove the crazy slanted path to the second parking area for the slot canyon trailhead.
Walked about five feet; decided it was way too hot to this in the afternoon.
Figured we would come back tomorrow; however, after looking at videos on u-tube, decided we have definitely outgrown these very narrow slots and the climbing up and over rocks.

Devil's Garden
"A 'Garden' of whimsical rock formations in a twisted slick rock desert."
 Fun place to explore.
