MARKAGUNT HIGH PLATEAU SCENIC DRIVE (Hwy 14)
The forested road through Cedar Mountain is lined with volcanic rock, slender white barked aspens, and dark green pine trees. Drop-dead gorgeous with the fall colors!
Duck Creek Village on Movie Ranch Road
The truly spectacular scenery!
  • MOVIE HISTORY: This area was a popular location for movie and television filming. In the 1940’s, Elizabeth Taylor called the village home on several occasions while filming Drums Along the Mohawk and National Velvet in the area. The Village was featured on the television shows How the West Was Won and Daniel Boone.

Aunt Sue's Chalet
for lunch--burgers, fresh made; very good. Great owners.
Aspen Mirror Lake
Sits on a high mountain plateau, fall colors reflecting in lake, next to small stream with little bridge. Beautiful spot!
Cascade FallsSpur road leads to this gorgeous .8 mile trail overlooking the southern edge of the Markagunt Plateau. The trail is well-maintained winding under the rim of the plateau; moderate inclines, numerous stairs. Ending at a rocky ledge, the water cascades down from a limestone cave to the stream below; not a lot of water today. Stunning views of Pink Cliffs and valley below from the platform overlook. This walk stimulates the senses: feel the cool wind blowing, hear the rustling leaves and water cascading down the mountain, smell the pine trees, see the colors--red & gold bushes, yellow trees, dark green pines, red cliffs.

Navajo Lake
Picture-perfect small lake at the top of Cedar Mountain framed by yellow aspens and pines.
Back to highway--great view of Navajo Lake at Overlook.
  • INFO: The lake formed when lava flowed across the valley. Lava tubes run under the lake, and all the water drains through sinkholes in the limestone beneath it into both the Great Basin and Colorado River.
Lava Beds
All along this area are the dark black rocks contrasting sharply with the bright yellow trees.

Continued driving west stopping at Viewpoints with unbelievable fall-color views.
Pullout at Top of Plateau (11,000 ft elevation)--awe-inspiring views of the towering pine forest and Zion and Kolb Canyons.

Webster Flat - MUST DO side road drive on an Autumn day.
There is no better place to be than here if you want to be surrounded with fall colors. This dirt road goes into the forest that we continually saw in the distance while driving west along the highway. Amazing sight here at the mountain top among the towering, white-barked aspen's shimmering yellow-gold leaves in the sunlight, fluttering when the wind blows.

WOW, color sensory overload on this drive.
