Nice drive, especially early in the morning.
Large fire-ravaged area (interesting with some yellow fall color among the dead trees). Beautiful large meadow areas.

Historic Lodge
Constructed of beautiful timbers and stone; the original burned; rebuilt in 1937.
Chair-lined large veranda overlooking the canyon was best spot.
Rough Riders Saloon: Porch perfect place for coffee, cinnamon roll before starting the scenic drive.

CAPE ROYAL ROAD
Spent about four hours stopping at all the viewpoints

Point Imperial: Highest point on either rim; rock juts out over canyon for fantastic views
Walhalla Overlook: Views of Colorado River and Unkar Delta
Walhalla Glade across the street--short self-guided walk around ruins of Puebloan summer home. Brochure makes ruins more interesting.

- HISTORY: Ancestral Puebloans used this large patch of sandy soil at a sweeping bend on the north side of the Colorado River for planting crops and building homes and granaries on the delta and along Unkar Creek.
Angels Window: First view is at pullout right before Cape Royal
Cape Royal: Self-guiding trail with closer views of Angels' Window, where a sliver of the Colorado River can be seen through this natural arch. Trail ends on top of Angels' Window Overlook
Driving Cape Royal Road had to slam on brakes to avoid two deer that jumped across the road right in front of us. Heart jumped a beat they were so close.

Lodge for dinner was the plan. However, 9 pm was the only dinner reservation available. Didn't want to wait that long.
Plan B--Deli for specialty pizza (really good), which we ate on the Lodge Veranda. Delightful, relaxing meal with unbeatable view!

Driving back along the meadow area buffalo herd on far side near trees.
Dark after this area with deer all along road entire way home--50+ about. Didn't drive much more than a mile without encountering deer eating grass right next to highway. Slow driving! Even deer crossing road right before campground.
First time at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
One day at the North Rim gave us a quick overview. Would have been nice to spend more time hiking. However, the campground was full and the National Park is closing tomorrow.
Will have to come back another year.
