Province of Messina, Sicily, Italy
Watched sunrise over mountains. Spectacular views of the city cruising along the coast with the church steeples rising along the hillside, especially Temple Christ the King high up on the hill overlooking the city.
Walked down Vittorio Emanuele street next to dock to Neptune statue in park; no water running in fountain and not very well maintained. Buildings have beautiful architecture; unfortunately, graffiti is everywhere along the street level. Litter everywhere.
Walking toward Temple Christ the King high up on the hill was constant up and up with lots of turns. Got into some areas that didn't look like neighborhoods to be wandering around. Kept seeing the church, asked directions but people didn't speak English so sign language had to do. Never did find the road up to it.
Very hot 88 degrees and tired so headed back down to PIAZZA del DUOMO to be there before noon for the clock tower animation. Very pretty square.  Orion Fountain created 1545-1551 in commemoration of Orion, who according to local legend was responsible for the founding of Messina. His dog Sirius is at his feet; angels representing the great rivers of antiquity--Ebro, Tiber, Nile, and Camaro, which is the fountain's primary water source.
Messina Cathedral: Mass was taking place so waited on steps until allowed entry. The procession was exiting when the many tourists were allowed entry. Very pretty columned basilica with the stunning painting over the main alter.
Clock Tower-Orologio Astronomico Four separate tiers on the huge tower. Top section is clock tower; one of largest astronomical clocks in world. Every day at noon is a show of motorized figures depicting scenes from Messina's history. Bronze human and animal characters rotate around the top of tower’s exterior to "Ava Maria" music: banner-bearing lion roaring, rooster crowing & flapping wings, and two of Messina's heroines ring a bell; even a depiction of the resurrection of Jesus.

A local guy informed us we must try Sicily's gratin. Barbera is near the square and has an outdoor area. The ice cold gratin was perfect for this hot, sunny day. Sure didn't seem much different than a slushee.
Since the cannoli originated in Sicily, getting one here was a must. Several locals said the best one is at Ragusa so off we went to find it. They were right, the best ever; filling so creamy smooth! Nice shaded courtyard to enjoy this treat. A small tour group led by a local arrived, so this must be the place.
Our favorite experience in Messina!
Interesting Etched Glass Angel along street outside. Across from Ragusa was Church of the Annunziation dei Catalani.
Only a short walk back to the boat. Enjoyed wandering on our own and talking with the local people.
