The dock here was at a big Shipping Port--Molo Italia 42 North.
Local information lady in ship's lobby gave us good directions and map of what to do here in Liverno and in Pisa. Shuttle Bus from the ship.
Good views of the Old Fortress of Livorno, a castle with a tower from the 11th century, built by the Medici family, to Via Cogorano near Piazza Grande, the main Town Square. Walked a block or so to Bus Stop; bus to Train Station about 15 minutes. Sat across from a nice Italian woman that spoke English who was also going to the train. She told us when to get off and what to do for getting train tickets. Just missed the 9:55 train by a few minutes; had to wait until 11:12. Talked with people from England on the other ship docked here as well as a girl from Israel visiting her mom here, who assisted us with tickets.
PISA is about 12 miles (20-min train ride) from Liverno on the banks of the Arno River. Statue by train station is di Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of unified Italy.
Walking from the Stazione Pisa Centrale Train Station, weren't sure which street to take to get to the Leaning Tower. Asked a group taking pictures. He was a professor from Boston Williams College taking a group of students on a tour through Italy. He welcomed us to join them since they were also going there. Great walking with them since he knew so much about the area.
Route from train station:
--Through Piazza di Vittorio Emanuele; via Corso Italia "the High Street of Pisa"--street performer playing bottles; Santa Maria del Carmine Catholic Church 1324-1328; Piazza XX Settembre.
--Crossed Arno River at Ponte di Mezzo lined with historic buildings; through Piazza Garibaldi, famous leader of the unification of Italy.

--Borgo Stretto street past
Church of San Michele, one of the city's oldest surviving religious buildings, built in late 10th and early 11th-centuries on the site of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the war-like god, Mars.
--Left on Cardinale Pietro Maffi where we parted ways for gelato at Bagni di Nerone not far from the Tower; couldn't pass up all the yummy-looking flavors. Sure hit the spot.

SQUARE OF MIRACLES Surrounded by walls with a huge grassy lawn with four monumental gleaming white-and-gray striped Romanesque and Gothic buildings. One of the most beautiful squares in Italy. This east entrance was a great spot for pictures of these magnificent white marble buildings with intricate patterns and columns.
Leaning Tower -- Construction began in 1172. Thanks to the soft ground, it began to lean by the time builders got to the third story, in 1178. Eventually completed in the mid-1300s made of white marble,180-feet high, 297 steps inside to the top. Very long line to climb the tower plus 94 degrees -- skipping this climb! Purchased tickets for 2 sites.
Cattedrale Pisa (Cathedral) Large five nave church constructed in 1064 and redesigned in 1595 following a fire. Stunning exterior contains multicolored marble, mosaic, and numerous bronze objects from the spoils of war. Inside the main attraction is the beautifully paved mosaic floor. Above the entrance a working clock dating back to 1443. Amazing both outside and inside. Huge stone columns with intricate designs; wood and gold-leaf ceiling; impressive large mosaic in the apse of Christ enthroned between the Virgin and Saint John. Free but need ticket to enter.
St. John’s Baptistery (1153-1278) stands west of the Cathedral, built between the 12th and 14th century. Famed for its font and pulpit of Nicola Pisano, 13th century reliefs on the main door, and excellent acoustics. About every half hour the man at the entrance comes in and sings--magical! Best view of Cathedral is upstairs from a little cut out in the window.
Took a break sitting in the shade on the Cathedral's steps and enjoyed talking with a group from England.
Left from the south gate and walked back the way the information lady gave us.
--Santa Maria street with many interesting shops; turned on De Mil to Piazza dei Cavalieri with beautiful buildings surrounding a statue of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in front of Palazzo della Carovana (now the Scuola Normale Superiore university), Palazzo dell’Orologio, Church of St. Rocco.
--Guglielmo Oberdan street to Borgo Stretto street with another gelato break--Manzi's watermelon sorbet made with real melon even had a few seeds; sure hit the spot--another very hot day.
--Corso Italia street and back the same way to the train station. So glad we walked to the Tower (about a mile) rather than take the bus. Such pretty, interesting streets plus the people we met.
Train back to LIVERNO at 4:30; lucked out, the bus was outside the station. A girl helped us get tickets and sat across from us telling us where to get off for the shuttle bus. Thank goodness for so many helpful people!
Shuttle back to ship enjoying the views along the port area.
Pisa was much more than just the Leaning Tower; thoroughly enjoyed the day here!
