Tamarindo, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica
Tamarindo
Car wash
after being back on paved road Paul only had one wish: to have a clean car... so Gine tries to find out what car wash in spanish means when we came by one: we drive in the guys wash it super clean: back to sparkling pearl white!!! Now we are ready for the town.
Why do people come to Tamarindo?
  • it is the most developed beach area and a surf mecca
  • it is favourite with backpackers
The Town of Tamarindo
as we drive into the town we already see that it is a surf town: there is one surf place after the next... and the same amount of restaurants and souvenir shops. Right in the middle we turn off and there is our hotel. It is only noon – so our room gets still cleaned – but we got the key and drive in our car. And Samantha is super friendly she tells us where to go, which places are great and what we all could do. So we wonder off and check out the beach: yes here is action – walk a little bit along the roads and come back to:
this place is awesome: we have a nice room with patio are only steps away from the pool and our car... so we decide today we hop in the pool and relax - a nice break from all our exploring. But because we decided to go catamaran sailing tomorrow we need some cash – so in search of the Bank: we find the Banco Nacional: the ATM says $ but it doesn’t accept our card. So we think we go inside bad idea: Paul has no T-shirt and Gine no pass port (and by the way there is a long line up). So we go in the other direction and see there: a lot of ATM’s and money.
Back to our little pool until it is time for:
Sunset at Playa Tamarindo
towels in and we walk to the beach: and there are now all the surfers out because the tide is coming in. So we walk towards the action and it is fun to watch them – especially the little kids trying their first surfing. Even we have to say compared to the really high waves we saw on other beaches – they are not that big... but it is all about fun. So jumping in the water – swimming – people watching and slowly the sun goes down and we saw a beautiful sunset.
the outdoor food court
it’s nice to wash of the salt water in a shower and then we check out the outdoor food court which looks super cute. And we decide on burgers: they were so yummy!!! and who knows maybe later we have to come back.... after we enjoy our little patio. I think I love Tamarindo!!
Time to relax
because we are alwas on the go we decided to day is a day we start out relaxed: sleeeping in – having a relaxed coffee and breakfast (by the way we had German cereal!!! we found it in Playa Ostienal: in the middle on nowhere!!). And then time to catch up on the computer and enjoy being in the warm.
Until the wind came up and and closed the door to our room: guess what the key was inside!!!!! that means we have to go to the front so that we can get the door opened – Gine decides that is Paul’s job!!
Time for the Sailing
and then we walk towards the beach it is time to go: we kind of find where all the Catamaran’s are anchored out on the ocean... and the Sea Shell crew comes with blue T-Shirts: all put into a little boat and we go out to the Catamaran.
Why is Sea Shell Catamaran tour so special?
  • The 38 ft Catamaran is owned by Sandro
  • And he is original born in Portugal and sailed the Athena: the Catameran we are on across the Atlantic ocean to Brasil, which took him 1 month: when I told him he was brave he said no I’m crazy. From there we sailed up and through the Panama canal and arrived here 2 years ago (I guess he knows how to sail)
  • the boat can take up to 18 people – we were only 10: more space for everyone
  • There is nothing like the exhileration of sailing of sailing through the open ocean: with the wind blowing through the sail, the smell of the fresh salt air and enjoying the sun dipping into the horizon
We are Sailing
  • We are sailing, we are sailing
  • home again, cross the sea
  • We are sailing – stormy waters – to be near you, to be free
on board we got freshly made fruit smoothies and then we set out... then the sails come out and we sail across the Bay... you don’t even know where to go: so better move around: in the front on the net or sitting right down – walking along the sides or in the relaxed.
So I don’t know what I enjoy more: the breeze – the view on the bay we cross – the open ocean – watching up in the sails... it was amazing. And between we got fresh fruits and fruit smoothies (or Paul some Pop – really!!!)
Paul becomes the captain
Suddenly Alex came and asked me to come back – my husband need me. And there is Paul at the ship’s wheel in the Captain’s chair – and here I thought Paul went out of the boating business. When I ask him if he knows where to go: Paul said I got told I should go around the rocks and then towards the beach – guess we end up where Paul brings us to.
we are anchored at a nice beach off Catalina Island and then you have option what you would like to do: so we first try with the snorkeling – but then we gave up and thought it was not the most mind blowing one – so we swim to the beach and enjoy the wonderful beach. Swimming back to the Catamaran: it is a lot of fun to only jump of it into the water swim around and out and jumping back in.... and all this makes hungry now the fruit smoothies are not enough anymore so it’s time for a late:
lunch on the boat
Sandro and Alex made a great little lunch for us... and on the water it tastes even better right... and then we are ready to
and then we are on the way back... we saw some fish jumping, saw the land glowing in the evening and catamarans sailing into the sunset.... it was amazing... and guess where did I find Paul when looking: again behind the Ship’s wheel steering us back to Tamarindo. It was an awesome day – you can’t describe how wonderful it was.
And I think what we liked best was that it was not a huge Catamaran – it was a small one and we were only a few people on it... It was super!!!!
Entertainment on the beach
walking back to our hotel along the beach we saw some fire-throwers – listened to some Comedian-Music and had fun... but then we were really in need of a shower to get rid of all the salt water. But today we had a shower with attitude or in Menopause: because regardless on how you set it: you got cold – warm – cold – hot – cold....
Instead of Supper – Ice cream: after such a late lunch at four – we decided we don’t need supper but instead will have some ice cream: Banana split!!
The vultures
today the alarm went off early: 6.25 – they haven’t even made coffee!! shopping – packing – filling up gas and we are on the go - and then we stop because  we see lots of vultures near the road: so we stop and check out why: there is a dead horse and the vultures are literally over and inside the horse....
