Raglan, Waikato, New Zealand
Raglan
We visit the Surfers town Raglan:
  • It’s a tourist town – still a laid-back surfer town with a pop of 3300
  • People come here to surf!! And we come to spend a day on the beach
  • The town itself is along the sheltered Raglan harbour
Checking out “downtown”
Today we decided to have finally a relaxing day: we get up –relaxing coffee and then walk to downtown (that is less than a block from our place). They have a lot and lot of little restaurants and take out food places – I think that is all they have besides the tiny supermarkets. We check them all out and find some chicken for supper as well some nice looking desert – perfect, Paul’s day is made!!!
Ngarunui Beach with the surfers
We head out to this famous beach: only when we arrive there are no parking spots available, but then a lot of cars park along the road so we did too (only to later find a ticket, as you are not parked in a yellow interrupted line – even there are no signs for no parking). Then the fun begins as we are still on top of the cliff and have to walk all the way down – out on the water we can see several surfers – the waves crash and we have some beautiful sand. We set up and jump into the waves, as this is so much fun. Later Paul relaxes and Gine went for a walk along the shore line – it is very pretty here with the green wavy grass along the cliffs. Once we thought that we have enough sunshine we decided to head back for a coffee and sun break. But first we had to walk all the way up again – what is great is that you have some amazing views.
Wainamu Beach
If the day is to relax on the beach – we have to go back to the beach: this time to the Wainamu Beach, here is lots of parking (but nearly no beach access as they put in everywhere fences and lines and put-up signs “only access in official access points” (guess then you should also give them). We went down to this nearly black sanded beach –it is pretty as we can see back into the Harbour of Raglan and then the waves are coming in kind of sidewise and still crash against the shore – very turbulent…. There are also some super pretty nice stones – it is a lot of fun.
Once back when going into the shower, that is when we realized how black the sand actually is against the white shower!!!
After such a relaxing day we are ready to move on tomorrow and to explore some more of NZ
