A Camping trip to the North Island
Aug 22 – Aug 31, 2011

This year our 2-week camping trip will be go to the northern part of Vancouver Island – since we never went there it's time to check it out.

Sayward Sayward
It’s a gray cloudy day and we are on the way north … our first stop is Sayward where we wanted to pick up some of those famous homemade Cinnamon buns – they are closed today. So we carry on.

Hoomak Lake Hoomak Lake
Our next stop is at the Hoomak Lake – we had a "northern Vancouver Island" brochure and discovered there is a trail along the lake… so we started out to walk along the lake – I think it was originally an railway track… going all the way to Woss… and today we are the only one exploring it and get some exercise in.

Telegraph Cove Telegraph Cove
Like a good tourist we visit Telegraph cove and camp on the pricy “concrete” wilderness campsite… at least there are not too many people around. From here we walk to the “little” town on stilts: it’s very cute to walk on the boardwalk between the cute old houses - see the little boats and large seaweeds flowing in the water.
We also loved to explore the little cove and walk out to the new development in some super nice sunshine and light.
The next morning we woke up with the clouds hanging around the hills.
  • It’s a tiny town with 20 inhabitants
  • It began all with a Telegraph line ending here

Telegraph Cove - hey are you watching me! Our first bear
And then we saw how everyone looks up the wall and see there: a bear – our very first bear we see here on the island – how exciting! So we stand with all the tourist making pictures and watching the bear and taking pictures.

We discover a German Motorhome
When we checked out the few campers here we discovered a Motorhome with German licence plate and had to have a quick check what they are doing here. And that’s how we started to meet Claudia and Uwe – the world travelers.

Telegraph Cove - wow!! The Saw Mill
Already on the way in we discovered the large mill, so on the way back we stopped on a view point where we could watch them… besides seeing a real large truck with tree trunks, we could also see how they unload them – it was kind of cool.

Canfor  An old rusty train
And there in the middle of nowhere sits an old train. Built in 1923 it was used in the Logging until 1968 – and as train lovers we had to stop there and take a picture from this old lady.
