We are now on the lower Sunshine coast and set up place in Sechelt:
What's so special about Sechelt?
- It means the land between the waters: it has saltwater on both sides: the Straight on the one side and the Sechelt inlet on the other
- It’s named after the original first nations
Hidden GroveWhen it’s rainy then you don’t go to the beach you go in the forest: so we walked through the Hidden Grove and got told that it has amazing huge old trees which are super special – unless you are from Vancouver Island, because there they are even bigger
Porpoise Bay PPCamping along salt water, you think you are at a big river and then you see the tide and the ocean creatures: like the barnacles... and you smell the ocean air even you are inland and then you discover that you are on an inlet....
Smuggler Cove PPIf you wonder where this cool name comes from: yes it was used for smuggling: they had illegal traffic of Chinese workers to the US… so we walked it in reverse and discovered this super cool cove - there are some many bays, coves, rocks... we don't have enough time to explore them all... around every corner you saw a spot you thought was nicer than the one before....
Sechelt’s Totem PolesTotem Poles are always fascinating to see, so we had to go and look at the 12 totem poles from the Coast Salish: the Shisash
It was cool to see, but the people hanging around here, were a little bit scary – so we didn’t stay to long here.
And about the totem poles:
- You can the 4 represent of the main clans of the Sishalh people: grizzly bear, killer whale, frog and wolf and the Elders says there is a 5th clan the eagle – because of the decline in first nation population the history of this clan is unclear
- The Shishalh clan is represented by the double headed eagle
