Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada

Gibson's – Sept 2, 2010
Our last stop on the Sunshine coast

Gibsons - Camping Where should we camp?
So yes there is the possibility of the Provincial park camping in the forest… that was really not turning as on a whole lot, so we decided to go the private RV Park: and choose Langdale RV Resort: one thing is for sure, it is very classy and you have your nice manicured lot with hedges and a view… so we stayed one night on a nice spot and one night in the overflow….

Gibsons - Camping We meet the Germans
And since we have a Canadian truck but a German licence plate on it, we got right away visitors: Hans, Marlene and Christa came over and asked us about the German licence plate… and so we got into contact with them, they love to travel and this year they visited Vancouver Island and the Sunshine coast… and we spent some time with them, talked in "German" with translation and kept afterwards in Contact. We always promised to visit them once, so maybe once it will work out….

Gibsons Landing Gibson’s landing
If you thought one Marina is like the other, you couldn’t be more wrong: this Marina is exceptional; it is super nicely made and has amazing views… a lot of cool spots to stand or sit down. You find the one gorgeous house boats with flowers around, you think it is a nursery…
It is amazing? And that was one of the reasons why we came here back again – and again – and again

What’s to know about Gibson’s?
  • Originally the Squamish Nation had here a seasonal fishing village – several outbreaks of small pox led to abandoned the town in 1900s
  • The first European settler was George Gibson, an ex-British naval officer, he built here a homestead in 1886: he built a 2-story house, planted a 100 fruit trees within 2 years and encouraged others like the Soames to move here
  • Since 1951 it has a car ferry service to the lower mainland – which started then to slowly pave the roads on the sunshine coast
Gibsons - Soames Hill Soames Hill Park
You can go and enjoy the area with a view from the top of a hill: Gine will find the way there… and so we go up to another incredible view on Howe Sound, the Gorgias Straight, Bowen Island… we liked it a lot – this is another must do, if you are here.

Gibsons - Molly Molly’s Reach
As a good Canadian you know what it is – and now Gine knows it too… so we stand at this historic spot and we also see the famous boat.

The Story about Molly’s Reach:
  • The site of CBC’s longest running Canadian drama: the Beachcombers
  • The beachcombers run from Oct 1972 – Dec 1990 with 387 episodes
  • The logging tug Persphone tracking down logs, was built in 1965 and donated to the town of Gibson’s in 1991 and sits in its park since 1997
  • The cafe Molly’s Reach was run by Molly
  • The café featured in the story was built as a hardware store in 1934 – the building only became a café after the series ended
Gibsons - it Fish & Chips at Ocean front
So there is that famous fish and chips place, but you stand in line forever before you get a spot and then you have to squeeze yourself between someone on the bench… so we decided for the same price we can have it more relaxed and romantic…

Good bye Sunshine Coast – we are going now to the Mainland

Ferry to the Lower Mainland Ferry to the lower Mainland
It is sunny and we had some great views to the islands when crossing Howe sound… you should have more time to be able to see everything… I think we need more time!!
It was amazing seeing not only the sun sparkle, all those islands and inlets, but also how the clouds were hanging in the mountains… Until now we only saw the Howe sound from the air: now we see it by boat and later today driving along it.
