Telegraph Cove

What was nice – it stopped raining when we came on the Ferry that means we can again enjoy the sundeck. But I do think we are always the only once jumping out of the truck and going up there. But then we enjoy the view and for us it is something special seeing the wild North Coast of Vancouver Island

Maybe it is clearing up… ok, so let's try and then we make our way to Telegraph cove for another night camping… and it is like last time: not a lot of RV’s, it’s pricy, and it is not the greatest weather….

- Here was the original Telegraph station of Northern Vancouver Island built in 1911
- The communication was especially crucial during the influence pandemic in 1918/19 which swept through the Alert Bay area – which was hard hit: one family with 4 kids had no contact with the outside world, when first the wife and then the husband became sick, they set out to reach Alert Bay and barely made it with their row boat to Alert Bay: both husband and wife died – and the attendant from the Cove had to row all 6 miles to Alert Bay with the message
- Lots of the houses were built in the 1930/40s: most of the people working in the mill
- With the hostilities in 1942 a new telegraph line was needed: the line was hung from Campbell River to Port Hardy. Relay watchman walked the line on a daily patrol to protect it from sabotage
- The floating hospital arrived in 1930 pulled in and then jacked up here
- The saw mill here provided much need lumber to build airports on the West Coast (like Port Hardy, Prince Rupert, Bella Bella, Coal Harbour) with the war looming. With a lot of man leaving for war and the Japanese families, it was a challenge since the military required all and a lot of wood. So the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) took command of the Telegraph Cove Mill and they kept the 2 owners as managers, but replaced the 12 man crew with 65 Military men – they had to build some more houses like a bunkhouse and a mess hall. In early 1946 the Mill was returned to the 2 owners and was running until the 1970s.
Then the raining started again – so we decided maybe it is time to enjoy some more time in our motorhome….

Guess what: we wake up and it is pouring down rain – so what’s the plan: we go home – no way will we stay in the rain. And during our drive home in the rain we discover: right before Campbell River the rain stops and there are only clouds….

Driving in the rain, we had a lot of time to make plans and so we decide: since we come home early and have 3 more days: we will clean up the motorhome and make it ready to sale.
And not even 2 weeks later our motorhome leaves our driveway the last time – we had a good time with you. Now we are excited when our next camping trip will be…..
